my computer crashes

I turn on my computer and everything seems fine...i can open internet explorer....any program, but when i right click on the desktop (where start menu is) the computer freezes. I have turned off and on my computer loads of times, still freezes when i right click. Everything is plugged in properly, my heatsink fan ect is fine, the only problem i think it might be is the graphics card?? the fan on it is extremely noisy, and it gets very hot!! do you agree??

please any suggestions will do

thanks

Re: my computer crashes

Noisy fans and heat are not good. But would this only affect Right Clicking?

Will it work OK in Safe Mode?

Try booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key after your BIOS POST but before Windows starts.

Re: Windows XP hangs when I right click
Hello. You have a damaged shell extension. The link below is a
utility that allows you to selectively disable them. Just run the EXE
and do a select all and choose disable, then see if you can right click
normally. If so, well, from there it is figuring out which one is
causing the grief.
The URL is --

I would check out this link:

Problems when you right-click an empty area in the Desktop?
If you have a problem when you right-click on a blank area on the Desktop, then you need to inspect the handlers in this registry key. I don't think ShellExView enumerates the items from here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ Background \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers

The only handler present by default (in a clean XP installation) is the New handler. If you find any additional sub-keys there, it may have be added by third-party applications. Usually, the software that comes with your graphic card adds entries to the above location. Here is one instance, an article from the Intel Graphics Controller website.

Thanks to Cliff for sending in this link

Re: my computer crashes

go to start/run and type regedit

Click on the + to expand the lists starting:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ Background \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers

You should see the next folder: New

Let us know if you see anything else.

Will return shortly...

Re: my computer crashes

What is your Operating System?

Is this a new problem?

Just to clarify: you say: click on the desktop (where start menu is) the computer freezes

Are you saying just right clicking the start menu button or anywhere on the blank desktop?

After it freezes do you have to shut down the computer manually?
