Is it OK to remove ndis, crss and msc32?

Just a quick history of the problem: my computer really slowed down so I ran the updated Adaware and Spybot - removed a whole lot of spyware (160). Also ran updated McAfee and AVG - removed a several Trojans (30). I will never lend my computer out again! But it still started up slow and did not close properly. Here was my Hijack log:

If I am not mistaken - the 01 entries were redirecting me from a legitimate bank site to bogus one where they steal your bank details?

I did some research: bleepingcomputer.com has a tutorial for highjackthis. I also downloaded Security Task Manager to quarantine programs I wasn't sure of. Everything works fine now. But if someone could check the log just to make sure:

ndis.exe, msc32.exe and crss.exe are in quarantine with Security Task Manager - they all rated 100% as potential viruses (although I understand that this is no guarantee). When I free any one of these the problem of slow start up returns. So is it OK to delete them?

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Definelty ok to delete them as Xharze said.

Just the one bad entry to fix with Hijack This:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Registry Server] regsrv32.exe

Then search for and delete regsrv32.exe, DO NOT get it confused with regsvr32.exe though.

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Thanks for replying. So far no problems with the these quarantined. There is a legitimate csrss.exe and a bogus one which is a keylogger - info I found at answersthatwork.com. Do you know if the 01 - entries were evidence of a bogus site redirecting banking to its look-a-like site with IP 65.75.165.10. I heard that such things exist. I just downloaded an extension to firefox which allows me so see if the site is genuine - pity I didn't do a test it by typing in one of these banking web sites.

Anyways - I will leave the .exe files quarantined for a week before I delete them just in case.

Have a good X-mas.

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Yes, such things do exist and in this case it would be very easy to create a bogue page. I have just checked the page at that IP, but in this case, there is no evidence of a bogue page.

The page contains the following HTML code:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<META HTTP-EQUIV=REFRESH CONTENT="0; URL=http://www.ukpersonal.hsbc.co.uk/public/ukpersonal/internet_banking/en/logon.jhtml">
</HEAD>
</HTML>

This is basically HTML Redirection Code that redirects any requests to that IP directly to the legitimate HSBC login page. There is currently no threat with the page and I don't think it is dangerous, but the address and redirection has to be there for a reason and at one time that may have been a bogus page or is going to be a bogus page in the future.

Those entries did have the potential to redirect any requests to one of the banking addresses listed to a site which could have captured your details.

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Thanks for the info Owen. As I am doing online banking I have installed the Spoolstick extension for Firefox which is supposed to tell the actual name of the site you are on. I don't know how well t his works - whether it can be fooled into thinking a bogus site is genuine. I guess I should check my Hijackthis log before giving any banking details on the web anyway - just in case there are any keyloggers lurking in my computer.

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Read this info for protection which will help keep the nasties like Keyloggers out.

Preventing it returning

After your problem has been resolved on the forum, it is an absoulute MUST to do the following steps to prevent the problem returning. Click on the link to get access to the software or webpage that I'm referring to.

1. Visit Windows Update
Pay a visit to Windows Update and scan for and download ALL Critical Updates and Service Packs. New updates are usually released monthly so check back to Windows Update every month.

2. Download Antivirus Software-
If you haven't already got Antivirus software, you should download and install AVG Antivirus. It is freeware and is updated nearly every 2 days (sometimes more frequently if there are a lot of new viruses) and in my opinion, is better than some Antivirus software such as Norton. Antivirus software will prevent viruses infecting your system and it is important that you update it every two days or every week at the most.

3. Download a Firewall-
If you haven't already got a firewall, it is Very important that you download one. Firewalls will prevent unauthorised access to your computer and stop data leaking out of your computer. You may think that it won't happen to you, but Hackers don't care who you are, what you do, where you live or what you had for tea last Sunday on your holiday in the Lake District, they want your data. Firewalls will keep these sneaks out and one of the best is Sygate Personal Firewall, which happens to be freeware.

4. Spyware Scanners-
It is important that as well as having real time spyware protection, you have a spyware scanning application. If you have not already been told to download one earlier in this thread, it is a good idea to download Spybot Search And Destroy and Ad-aware. They are both spyware scanners and will search for a remove spyware. It is recommended that you have both, because one will pick up entries that the other misses. It is even a good idea to download these if you have other programs such as ASE, Spysweeper, Pest Patrol, etc, because one spyware scanner will not pick up everything. Please remember to update your spyware scanners weekly/fortnightly.

5. Prevent Spyware slipping through Internet Explorer-
Quite a lot of spyware slips through Internet Explorer if your settings are not tight enough. Spyware Blaster will help you prevent spyware slipping through and installing tracking cookies. Simply run it via Start> Programs> Spyware Blaster and click Enable All Protection and it will protect you. It doesn't even have to be open! Remember to update weekly/fortnightly.

6. Constant Spyware Protection-
It is important to have constant spyware protection. Spyware Guard works like an antivirus program but detects Spyware instead. It will constantly protect your system. Check for updates monthly.

All Of these steps are very important and it is HIGHLY recommended that you download all of the programs mentioned for your own safety. Remember to Update everything (including Windows using Windows Update)! It is also a good idea to perform weekly/fortnightly scans with Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and your antivirus software.

And last of all, please remember, that common sense is your greatest tool. Without it, spyware and other related Malware would rule!

Re: Hijack this log - computer won't shut down

Thanks Owen - I was away so couldn't check the forums. I removed regsrv32.exe - it started causing serious problems. I have found Security Task Manager to be particularly helpful in removing suspicious processes - especially as you have the option of quarantine first if you are not sure. But of course prevention is better than cure so I will go through all the steps you have given - thanks again.
