Here it is; thanks a lot! My problem... tons of Adware and Spyware that I can't seem to get rid of with daily scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot and Norton Anti-virus. I let someone use my laptop in July and I think he OK'd something that started the proliferation.

First of all we will get rid of WinTools, follow these instructions:

How to remove Wintools infections.
  1. Disable System restore as per the instructions here.
  2. Reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  3. Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services".
  4. Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.
  5. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  6. Go into "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" and look for any Wintools entry. Uninstall it.
  7. Open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then <ENTER>.
  8. Type exit to close the command prompt window.
  9. Delete the following directories:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
    • C:\Program Files\Toolbar
  10. Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

    • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50093
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Thanks ever so much for all the guidance. Today I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, and rebooted, then ran Hijackthis, so I'm enclosing my latest log. I can see there's still some junk there. Also, I noticed that Ads234 is still lurking about.

Question about firewalls: we have a firewall installed on our router. I'm using a wireless connection to my laptop. Do I need to have a firewall installed directly on my laptop in addition to the one on the router?

Right I'll deal with the rest.

First of all download Peper Fix from here and save it to a convenient location, don't run it yet.

Then close all browser windows, restart Hijack This and put a checkmark next to the following entries:

O2 - BHO: Search Help - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\N.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dsi] C:\WINNT\System32\dp-him.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O16 - DPF: {FF65677A-8977-48CA-916A-DFF81B037DF3} - http://download.overpro.com/WildApp.cab

Click Fix Checked

Then boot into Safe Mode and ensure that you are showing Hidden Files and Folders.

Go to C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\ and once in the folder click Edit> Select All and get rid of the entire contents of the folder by pressing Delete. Leave the folder intact though.

Delete the following files and folders:
C:\WINNT\System32\IEHost.exe
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate
C:\WINNT\System32\dp-him.exe

Then run the PeperFix file you downloaded earlier and remove your Peper Trojan infection.

Then reboot and post a fresh log

OK, thanks for continuing to guide me along. I followed the above instructions. I couldn't find any files named "IEHost.exe" or "dp-him.exe". The only "autoupdate" I could find was C:\WINNT\Prefetch\AUTOUPDATE.EXE-061604.pf. I didn't remove it, but I will if you tell me to!
