Hijack this log

I've got an old Toshiba laptop running Windows 98. It has had a problem running IE6.1 in the past so I have started using Firefox. Just recently it has started running into a problem running either IE or Firefox. It starts to open it and then stops. Going into the task manager shows that the browser is opened but double clicking on it comes up with a message that it is not responding. This happens with IE or Firefox.

Hi,radio geek

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:
RDPR.EXE

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [autoupdate] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DATADX.DLL,SHStart
O4 - Startup: rdpr.exe

O16 - DPF: Win32 Classes - file://C:\WINDOWS\Java\classes\win32ie4.cab

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

Delete the following files\folders IF still present:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DATADX.DLL<---This file

Still in Safe Mode do a file Search for this file if found delete it
rdpr.exe

Then reboot till us how the PC is.

That file i am having you fix is here
C:\WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP\RDPR.EXE

is it something you may have installed if so have a look
in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs see if it is in there
if so before doing the fix Remove/Uninstall it.

Re: Hijack this log

Sorry back at you, I was on vacation. Here is another HJT log. I was wondering about "irmon". Also "rpdr.exe" appears to be back. I ran a program called "crapcleaner", then searched for "rpdr.exe" and it didn't appear.

Hi,radio geek

Ok here is what i need you to try goto Safe Mode

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop check for updates but do not use it yet

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\PAAPAB.EXE

For this file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X It will ask you if you want to reboot answer YES

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Then do a reboot see how it is & show one more logfile.

Re: Hijack this log

Now we're getting somewhere. I did what you asked and I was able to open IE and Firefox, but upon every reboot "PAAPAB" and "RDPR" show back up. I can run a program "process explorer" and kill "PAAPAB" and then open a browser, but like I said it comes back upon a reboot. I've also noticed an blue screen of death showing up every once in awhile concerning spare stack pages. Here is one more HJT log file after killing "PAAPAB"

Hey,radio geek

Lit's try something here i think this should run on Win98

Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop.
Unzip/extract the files inside preferable to C:\ < a new folder.
Disconnect from the internet, if you use an always on internet connection unplug it.
Let your PC be idle for 15 minutes !!
Open the folder and run the FindIt's.bat and wait for a text to open, it will take awhile be patient, post the results please.
http://forums.net-integration.net/in...post&id=142443

If you get an error similar to:
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application...etc etc'
Go here and use the approprient fix for your system

Re: Hijack this log

I managed to get "Housecall" to run, and it localized 10 viruses, two of which were "rdpr" and "paapab".I had it delete them, then rebooted and ran it again and nothing came up. Doing a find for both of those two came up with both with a .lgc extension at a location of c:\windows\applog. Here is another HJT log.

Wink Re: Hijack this log

Hi,radio geek

I don't see anything in the logfile but would like
to ask you these 2 items here

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Norton Auto-Protect] (value not set)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV DefAlert] (value not set)

are they some option you disabled if so why
& what are they.

by the way nice work on the cleanup
