norton internet security problems

Oook, Im having quite a few problems with my norton internet security 2005. Im running windows xp sp2 and have intel pentium m processor 1.60 ghz, 504mb ram on my laptop. This might be a bit complicated and difficult to explain and understand, but here goes...

Ive never really had a problem with norton internet security until recently. Everytime I run a new program with internet capabilities and norton's firewall pops up to ask what I want to do (block or allow all connections on this port etc etc blah blah) the program then freezes. For example, I updated CCleaner the other day, and this caused norton to ask if I wanted it to be blocked. It froze CCleaner and froze the whole of windows. The same happened the other day when I tried to install my lexmark printer. I had to disable the norton firewall in order for me to be able to install the printer without it freezing as it always froze halfway through the setup program when norton would pop up with its annoyin "block or allow this programs access to the internet" message. SO eventually installed the printer etc and it worked fine, until i disconnected and reconnected the printers USB cable to my laptop and norton wanted to know if I would want 'spoolsv' i think it was called, (which I assume was part of the printer) blocked or allowed. I clicked allow like I usually do with these programs I trust and it froze the computer. I couldnt get into the "printers and other hardware" folder in the control panel and had to force the comp to restart. I then tried simply re-connecting the printer and printing something but this also caused the computer to freeze.

Also, the laptop won;t shut down properly without a fight. This is becoming rather annoying and I dont know what to do. Im sorry if this has been posted in the wrong section, and I dont know if a HJT log will help but here's one anyway:

Just for the record I regularly run CCleaner, AdAware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy and have AVG which I also run. I would also download Spyware blaster and the other programs mentioned but last time I did that my wireless connection refused to work and my whole internet connection went down. Im not sure why and I dont even know if thats what caused my wireless to fail but now I have it working again I dont want to risk ruining it! plus, to install spyware blaster and the other program (spyguard or something) I have to start the laptop in safe mode otherwise they won't install because they come up with an error message about overwriting a file...

Anyway I would be thankful for any help anybody can give me. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Two things jump out at me

1. Running two anti-virus programs is a bad idea, I suggest uninstalling your least favorite one.

2. Norton has a firewall, so does SP2, running two firewalls is also a bad idea, I suggest turning one off and useing one only.

See if that helps.

hey, just want to say thanks firstly for your speedy reply!

Anyway, I uninstalled AVG...bad choice? Im not sure...I dont like norton much these days but thought if I uninstalled norton instead it would be more hassle as Ive heard it can be.

I don't think Im running 2 firewalls at the moment though, because my windows firewall (which is what I presume you were referring to when you said that SP2 also has a firewall) has never been enabled, and even if I did want it to be enabled it doesnt seem to stay enabled. So i simply use nortons firewall.

So, we're back to one antivirus program and one firewall. Will retry the printer tomorrow and get back to you on whether it works or carries on freezing.

In the meantime, is there anything I should be deleting from the HJT log file? Heres a more up to date one after uninstalling AVG:

ok...I tried the printer again after uninstalling AVG and just making sure there is one antivirus program and one firewall running...(my windows firewall is, indeed, disabled)...but no joy. Norton came up with "spoolsv.exe is trying to access the internet" and then, like usual, asked if I wanted to allow or block. It recommended I allow all connections so I did. However, the printer wouldn't print anything yet again and whichever program I was trying to print from (in this case, notepad) froze. I also couldn't access the folder of "installed printers and faxes" again in the control panel.

I don't know whats causing this problem...but I now know exactly what the situation is...I CAN print...but only if I turn off norton internet security's firewall before I connect my printer. This then avoids the "spoolsv is trying to access the internet, block or allow?" message popping up and, surprise surprise nothing freezes and I can print perfectly well. I can even get into the printer and faxes folder in the control panel. So it seems it is DEFINATELY norton internet security 2005 causing the problem. But I don't know why.

So basically what I want to know is...what's the best soultion to this? Is the ONLY soultion to uninstall norton internet security 2005? This is really strange, Ive never know norton to freeze things like this.

Your HJT log is clean.

The first thing that comes to mind is disableing Norton firewall and use a free firewall like Sygate.

From what I have been able to gather uninstalling Norton 2005 can be a bugger but can be done by going to Symantec website and following instructions there.

In my opinion AVG is much better due to not being a hugh resource hog like Norton.
