Help with IE 6

I downloaded MS updates on November 2, which I believe are the cumulative security updates MS05-052. After rebooting, I now get Internet Explorer popping open every 10 minutes. It has a very long URL in the address bar which is made up of numbers and letters. The body of the message says the page cannot be displayed and to look in the same site that is in the URL. I believe the problem is with the shdoclc.dll file, but I do ot knwo how to fix it.

The URL is as follows:
http://e0fce04e9f0ad427ff866dabe93b5...866dabe93b56ca

I constantly run Adware, Spybot and I recently updated Norton to the 2006 version. Below is my hijack log. Can anyone help?

Re: Help with IE 6

First move Hijackthis out of the TEMP folder and put it in a permanent folder somewhere:
  • Create a new folder in your C: Drive. Name it HJT (or HijackThis) such as C:\Program Files\HJT, C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file in it.
  • It's best for this tool NOT TO be located in your Desktop or in a TEMP folder. This way you can undo any changes if something goes wrong.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SYSRES] Sysres.exe

REFERENCE: http://www.viruslist.com/en/viruses/...?virusid=35199 (or variant)

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for:
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Downloaded Program Files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Temporary Files
Click OK or Enter

Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

DELETE FILES:

C:\WINNT\Sysres.exe

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Thanks,

I did what you said and when I rebooted after your final instructions IE opened showing the same.

I should note, when it opens it shows res://shdoclc.dll/

Re: Help with IE 6

Fix the following HJT line item:

O4 - Global Startup: Install Pending Files.LNK = C:\Program Files\SIFXINST\SIFXINST.EXE

Also run both Symantec Security Check scans. Let it fix anything that it may find:

http://security.symantec.com/default.asp

Post a revised HJT log and any relevant feedback.

Re: Help with IE 6

Below is the newest Hijack log.

I deleted the item you siggested. It did not stop IE from opening.

Symantec did not report anything on either scan, so there were no actions taken.

I believe the problem is from the updates I downloaded on Nov. 2. They are the cumulative updates MS05-052.

I can open IE manually and it will open at the correct page I have designated, Google.com. However, whether I am online or offline, IE opens every 10 minutes with the oringinal message I described. At the top of the page is the following address:

res://shdoclc/syntax.htm - Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Thanks

Re: Help with IE 6

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free (trial) version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

Re: Help with IE 6

Below are the scan results.

Sorry to say, it has not quit. As I was typing this message, a new IE opened with the original message stated in my original posting.

I also ran the newset version of CWShredder when this first appeared with no results. I also ran Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta version) and deleted 9 problems.

Re: Help with IE 6

Lets see what the following scan may turn up:

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
http://www.webroot.com/downloads/
  • Click the Free Trial link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
  • Double-click the file to install it as follows:
    • Click "Next", read the agreement, Click "Next"
    • Choose "Custom" click "Next".
    • Leave the default installation directoy as it is, then click "Next".
    • UNcheck "Run SpySweeper at Windows Startup" and "Add Sweep for Spyware to Windows Explorer Context Menu". Click "Next".
    • On the following screen you can leave the e-mail address field blank, if you wish. Click "Next".
    • Finally, click "Install"
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
    Disable SpySweeper Shields
    • Click Shields on the left.
    • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
    • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
    • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Once the definitions are installed and shields disabled, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

Post the SpySweeper session log here along with a fresh HiJackThis log.
