Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled (RESOLVED)

Hi guys,

I had a toolbar hijacker today that redirected me to a casino site everytime I did an internet search. I finally managed to get rid of it with HijackThis but my other detection and removal devices are still not working properly:

Spybot S&D gets to "(643/32961: Central 24)" and then stops. It claims that I have aborted the scan.

Adaware gets stuck while deep scanning the local registry at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software" - it has already identified some critical issues by this stage but I can't access them because the program doesn't respond.

NoAdware just won't even start scanning.

All the above problems existed while the toolbar was on my machine - nothing has changed now that it has been removed.

My HijackThis log is:

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Get hoster here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Unzip it to a convenient place and open the program.
Choose "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
Close the program.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free (trial) version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

REBOOT.

You have a Domain NameServer from a Ukrainian source - not good. It appears to monitoring your ISP related activities:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=85.255.112.80
Quote:
% Information related to '85.255.112.0 - 85.255.127.255'

netname: inhoster
descr: Inhoster hosting company
descr: OOO Inhoster, Poltavskij Shliax 24, Kharkiv, 61000, Ukraine

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items (if items are still present):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EXPLORER] C:\WINNT\system32\shellexp.exe en

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DF1CB02B-C101-4864-B79A-8D4FFE60AFE0}: Domain = nsw.bigpond.net.au
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DF1CB02B-C101-4864-B79A-8D4FFE60AFE0}: NameServer = 85.255.113.116,85.255.112.80

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for:
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Downloaded Program Files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Temporary Files
Click OK or Enter

***** Clean out the Recycle Bin for items removed below, ONLY once you have regained the full functional use of your PC.

Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

DELETE FILES:
C:\WINNT\system32\shellexp.exe

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log and Ewido log with any additional feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Vincent,

Thank you so much for your reply. I wish I could say that I was able to follow all your instructions and that the problem is fixed. However, I have had a b#%ch of a day trying to sort this out.

I will take you through in chronological order in the hope that you will be able to advise me further. Please don't be put off by the length of this post - I'm sure much of it will give you a laugh.

Because I am studying online I was anxious to sort this out. I hadn't had a reply to my post (when others posted after me had) and I thought, perhaps, that I might not get a reply. Last night I downloaded Advanced System Optimizer and tried to fix what I thought was a registry problem. In fairness, it did locate and remove Trojan.Win32.Qhost.df which, for a while, seemed to do the trick - although my computer was still desperately slow.

I tried Spybot, Adaware, and NoAdware again but they all stopped at the same places they did before.

This morning I started my system and tried a search on Google. The search was fine but the moment I clicked on one of the search reults I was redirected by 'cheapsoft4all.info' to the casino site again. I then checked this forum for a reply. I set about following your instructions. The first problem I encountered was trying to print a copy of what you had written - my printer was not being recognised and then Word froze. I ended up writing it all out by hand!

The first part - getting the hoster - was no problem. Instructions followed OK.

I downloaded the ewido trojan scanner and began to follow your instructions in the order you wrote them. The first sign of a problem came at No.2 when ewido didn't automatically run - I had to find it and start it. I didn't get the warning you predicted about the database.
When I attempted to update it as at No.3, it told me that I could not connect to the website (despite the fact that I still had an open connection) and that the option was not available so I could not update. Still, I figured that since I had just downloaded it, it would be up to date.

Your advice about the length of the scan seemed to be understated when, after 1 hour, only 10% of the scan had been completed. Now here's where everything goes horribly wrong. Firstly, it found something and popped up a notification as you mentioned at No.5.
However, it didn't give me an option of 'clean' - just 'remove'. The other choices were there so I checked those boxes as instructed and clicked OK. A bit later, a Windows message box appeared which said ' Windows Wrong Volume. Please insert volume AO_002_17On into drive D:' Since I couldn't do that, I tried to press one of the three option buttons, but the box would not go away so I just left it there. While it continued scanning, I went and had a shower.

During my shower, would you believe, we had a power outage. We have about two a year and I could not believe that one happened during this scan. When I returned to my computer it had rebooted automatically and the scan was gone. When I started the scan again, it went much much quicker until it announced a Program Error:

SecuritySuite.e.exe

Instruction at "0x77fcd79a" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program.

I tried to re-download the program (ewido) but, when it was installing, it kept getting stuck while it was trying to create a shortcut. The computer would just freeze.

Then, everytime I tried to reboot, my computer would freeze. The task manager showed that System Idle Host and svchost.exe would alternately use up the CPU's memory.

So, I never got to complete an ewido report. And I had a frozen computer and no way of letting you know because I have no other access and I live in a remote Australian town!!!

Since your instructions suggested I could go to the next phase without the report, after many attempts to restart my computer it finally started and I did a HJT scan. I removed the two '017's that were in there but the '04' was no longer there.

Then I started in Safe Mode and followed the remaining instructions. All went well until I tried to reboot. Nothing. Nada. Just frozen again. After pulling out my hair and trying various things, I eventually went into F8 and rebooted from last known OK and that is where I am at now. I have done another HJT scan and it follows this (if you can bear to look at it after all this!!). By the way, any other posters out there reading this, I am sure some of you are laughing hysterically and some of you are shaking your heads in dismay - I'm sure I would be if I knew anything about computers!

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Your post details were very appropriate and does show how things can get seemingly worse despite your best efforts. Malware is not a laughing matter. And, people can certainly learn from your what you have written. The info provided was very relevant and informative.

After all your troubles you seem to have gotten almost all you set out to clean. Good job and very resourceful on your part.

I must say that 'Noadware' is not on the the top of my list of tools to use (User optional choice):
Quote:
NoAdware Adware/Spyware remover - initially considerered a rogue program - see here http://www.adwarereport.com/mt/archives/000023.html . The latest version has since apparently mended its ways: see note http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_...e.htm#naw_note
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-6393.html

Fix the following additional item in HJT:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Startup Manager] C:\Documents and Settings\user\APPLICation Data\Systweak\ASO 2\smstartUp manager.exe

Delete the following file (at least) and also probably these FOLDERS, in SAFE MODE if necessary:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\APPLICation Data\Systweak\ASO 2\smstartUp manager.exe

REBOOT back into SAFE MODE and see if you can now run EWIDO without incident. Both items should be recoverable should you need to get them back.

Further scans should be undertaken once your PC shows better stability signs.

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Vincent,

Thank you again for your help. However, yet again, it has not been smooth sailing. My apologies in advance for what might be another long post.

I followed your instructions and ran EWIDO without incident. During its search it found 'Downloader_Agent.uj' and I removed it as suggested. I saved the report and it is the first of the EWIDO reports that I will include later in this post.

At the end of the scan, EWIDO gave me a warning of a problem it had found: The file"C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\arr 3.jar-1574db92-519cba16.zip/Gummy.class" cannot be removed because it is embedded in the archive "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\arr 3.jar-1574db92-519cba16.zip". Do you want to remove the whole archive?

I answered yes to this and, once it had been removed, I got similar questions for about 15 other similar sounding files and I removed them all. Then EWIDO removed the rest of the files.

Because I could not access the Internet in Safe Mode (in order to contact you), I attempted to start my computer again but the same thing happened - it freezes at a point between where the desktop appears and where the icons are fully visible (they are in their basic form instead).

I made various attempts to start it, all without success. I eventually tried my tack yesterday of 'last known good configuration' but even that, now, freezes at the same point. Incidentally, I don't know if it is of any help but, when I go to shutdown, I get a message that CCAPP.EXE is not responding and has to be ended manually.

In desperation, I rebooted in Safe mode with networking in the hope that it would allow me access to the net. It is from there that I am posting this message. While in here, I decided to try and update EWIDO (which I couldn't do yesterday) and it allowed me to do that.

I then ran a scan of the updated version and it appaers that the Downloader Agent is a stubborn sod and is still there. The third EWIDO report is the one done by the updated version. The second is a scan I ran in between the two.

I have also included the last two HJT logs to give you more info.

So, the situation is that I can longer access my computer in anything other than Safe Mode (how does that work, by the way?) and I am getting quite desperate. Once i have sent this message I will try again but I am not hopeful. If I manage to access it I will let you know in a further post.

Thanks again, Vincent. Is this thing able to be repaired or should I think about starting all over again? While all this is happening, I have been unable to study and I have rapidly approaching deadlines!

Regards, Dan

Addendum:

Started computer and got in. it went to inactive desktop. I started active desktop and did another HJT scan - log on next post as too long for this one. Tried to do another ewido scan but it stops at various points with the message that SecuritySuite.e.exe has generated errors and will close. I cannot get it to do a complete scan so I have no latest report for you.

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Apparently successful solution here - see fix instructions below:
http://castlecops.com/postlite141517-.html
Quote:
Just wanted to let you know that on the advice of a friend, I downloaded and ran "FixWareout", and it took care of the problem with DownloaderAgent.UJ

After I ran it, I had to reboot, and then I ran Ewido, which then gave me a clean log. I restarted my computer again, and then ran Ewido once more just to be on the safe side, and sure enough I received another clean log.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php...=post&id=43811
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and post the latest HJT log from NORMAL MODE.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

Thanks Vincent,

I downloaded Fixwareout as yo suggested. When I clicked 'Finish' I immediately got the following report and nothing more. I don't know what it means, but it doesn't look good.

Check for missing files
.....
C:\WINNT\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT not there
.....
End check for missing files
.....
VXD Check
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\VirtualDeviceDrivers]
"VDD"=hex(7):43,3a,5c,50,52,4f,47,52,41,7e,31,5c,5 3,79,6d,61,6e,74,65,63,5c,53,\
33,32,45,56,4e,54,31,2e,44,4c,4c,00,00
.....
End vxd check
.....
please post this at the forum

When I tried to start IE again it took a few attempts as it kept closing and telling me there was an error.

By the way, that missing file looks important; I don't have any CDs etc to reload my OS. Your advice, as always, will be gratefully received and followed.

Regards, Dan

Re: Spybot S&D and Adaware disabled

The fixwareout message appears to be normal and without any direct need to address anything in the message:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...G=Search&meta=

Does Ewido now run CLEAN?

Can you run the following Panda Activescan (online scan using Internet Explorer)? If so, post any log contents that it generates:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

Post your latest HJT log in case anything has changed.
