Unhappy Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware (RESOLVED)

Trying to clean up computer from what seems to be adware or viruses (running slow and odd things going on while in Internet Explorer). Ran Adaware SE with updated signatures - not very much found but quarantined and removed what was found. Ran Norton Antivirus with updated signatures - nothing found when ran in regular or safe mode. Ran Ewido, allowed it to fix/correct all problems found. Ran Trend Micro's Housecall - found several items marked as 'greyware' - chose delete option but the web page seems to flake out when that is going on. Never finishes completely (as far as I can tell).

While running Microsoft's AntiSpyware program, receive Norton virus warning for the following: Trojan.horse on c:\windows\system32\howiper.exe and Trojan.Adclicker on c:\windows\system32\idemlog.exe. I open windows explorer to look for these two files and they are not there!! Can not find them on the computer at all!! First time this was run there were 23 items (one was VNC-I have installed so I can assist family member when needed, remotely) that were marked to be deleted. Allowed the program to delete the items. Now when I run this program only the VNC is detected. But Norton Antivirus software still detects the two above mentioned viruses.

I need assistance with this. Please email me at my account email address and I will reply with the Hijack This log, unless you want it attached in the postings on this website.

I am getting frustrated - again!!!

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please run the following assessment scan to locate HIDDEN malware files. The two (2) files that you named are known to this tool - other files are also likely present. See here for a case very similar to yours (other circumstances may differ):
http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showpost.p...8&postcount=15

(BETA Rootkit Elimination Technology):
Note: The F-Secure BlackLight Beta only works on 32-bit Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. The current F-Secure BlackLight beta does not work on Windows NT, 95, 98, ME, or 64-bit Windows.

Please print out these instructions as you should have all open windows and programs closed when running the scan.

Step 1.
==========

- Please download F-Secure's trial Blacklight from here
- Print out the help page for guidance. It will be found here
- Click the "I Accept" button at the license agreement
- Click the "Download" button to start the download
- Save it to your Desktop

Step 2.
==========

- Double-click the blbeta.exe file on your Desktop and select ‘Run’.
- Select the "I Accept the agreement" at the license agreement, then click "Next"
- Make sure "Scan through Windows Explorer (Recommended)" is selected\checked (if asked)
- Make sure all open programs and windows are closed (including this IE window) before clicking the "Scan" button
- Click "Scan

- When the animated graphics, in the bottom right-hand corner disappears, click "Close" – VERY IMPORTANT: Do not proceed beyond this point on the initial first assessment – this is BETA software – need to proceed carefully

- A text log file will appear on your Desktop when the scan is complete. It will start with fsbl-xxxxxx.txt (i.e.: fsbl-20051017165931.log)
- Paste the contents of that log back here.

Also post your latest HJT log.

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

Vincent,

I downloaded the F-Secure BlackLight Beta file and attempted to run it - the beta version has expired and will not allow me to install or run it.

Any other suggestions?

Behunie

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

Their site says it is free of charge until the 1st of March 2006. Sent them an email on that discrepency [EDIT: They confirm that the BETA is and shoud be available til that specified date].

Try this one, then:

Please download this file:
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/rootkitrevealer.zip
Unzip it to its own folder or to your desktop.
Run RootkitRevealer.exe and scan your system. When the scan is complete click on File, Save, and save the log file. Copy and paste the log file here.

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

I've had someone else run 'Blacklight' today without problem (evaluation scan only). It would be best to try and run that tool again and to show even a clean log to add the needed confidence that there still aren't 'hidden' file problems on your PC. Hidden problems can interfere with fixes such as the ones detailed below.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free (trial) version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate (Ewido log) - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Vincent,

Here is the logs, etc.

F-Secure BlackLight:
I was able to get the F-Secure BlackLight to work this time. Must have had something to do with the fact that I did not save the program to the desktop at first. I moved the program to the desktop and then it executed okay. Below is the log from it:

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

When I run Microsoft's AntiSpyware program after all the above, I still get a notification from Norton Antivirus as follows:
C:\Windows\System32\howiper.exe infected with Trojan Horse
C:\Windows\System32\idemlog.exe infected with Trojan.AdClicker

So the problem is still there.

I have not had the Internet Explorer home page hijacked since right after I started with this cleaning process. So whatever was doing that must be gone.

I don't know, any further suggestions??

Re: Trojan.Adclicker detected by Nortons when running Microsoft AntiSpyware

Re-run the Blacklight scan after carefully reading the notes and instructions, here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/help/

Close all open windows and programs before running the scan. Make sure that you have completely reviewed the help link details before proceeding:

Re-run 'Blacklight' and allow it to rename the following files.
  • Use the Rename button for each listed item (below).
  • Let Blacklite restart the PC.
  • Post a revised scan once done (with any new observations):
