dl.exe problem

Hi,
I unintentionally executed a malicious .exe program, which has done a lot of damage to my desktop.

When I start the computer, it opens up randomly a dos window called dl.exe, then sends an error message titled “sub-system MS-DOS 16 bits”, reading that “the NTVDM processor has executed an invalid instruction”. The dl.exe process replicates itself and takes 100% of the processing power.

It also keeps sending me an error message from wuauclt.exe

I serached the internet and found that it might be a worm. I followed the instructions given by Symantec to delete "syslogin.exe" = "syslogin.exe" for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
but couldn't find such line in the given key.

The system starts and works properly in the safe mode.

I've been fighting with this for quite a while and your help would be very much appreciated.

The virus has somehow killed my internet access. To install anything I have to save the file from another computer and transfer it via cd.

Download WinsockFix.zip. © Option^Explicit
UnZip WinsockFix.zip


Now run WinsockFix.exe. Click the Fix button.
This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database.
After the program is complete, reboot and tell me how things are now.

I did run run WinsockFix. Unfortunately it didn't help much.
When I start the PC, the first thing that happens is a black Dos windows pop-up with an error message from MS-DOS 16 bits sub-system that reads: "dl.exe processor NTDDM met unauthorized instruction". From there, if I close that window, it sends me tons of error messages from a variety of processes: Application Layer Gateway Service, PML Driver, Generic Host Process, wuauclt.exe, Windows User Mode Driver Manager, TCP/IP Service Application, etc.
If I don't do anything, other black dl.exe windows pop up and I get even more error messages.
At this point, I'd be even happy to reformat my disk, but I can't even do that because my Dell came with a Service Pack 1a and then I installed SP2 that I downloaded from Microsoft. Now it tells me that I can't install my original OS. If you could guide me to just format my disk and start clean I'd be very grateful.

That's a shame, I have never done a reformat before but the guys over in the XPHelp section can probably help you. Just tell them you want to reformat.


If they can't walk you thru it I bet they have links that you can go to that will walk you thru it.

This one is a bad virus.
I had to reformat my disk and reinstall XP. The virus was still there.
I called Dell. They giuded me to delete all the partitions and do a clean install.
Believe it or not, but dl.exe is still there. How can that be possible?
My XP is just installed. No other software installed. Nothing.
dl.exe black Dos window is the first thing that comes up when the system gets started. Internet connection is gone.
Any ideas?

Well you got the worst of the worst it seems. Several things we will try.


Print this out if needed.


Click start, click run, type in taskmgr.exe and press ok or enter then click on process tab and end process on dl.exe hopefully. If there.


Then...



Go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post back and let us know what it found (post the log).

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
- Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
- Scan Archives
- Scan Mail Bases

* Click OK
*Now under select a target to scan:
o Select My Computer
* This program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
o Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
* Copy and paste that information in your next post.

It turned out that every executable file in the system including the drivers were infected by Win32.Gael.3666. Everything on my external hard drive was infected too. When I reformated the entire C drive, it was a matter of minutes before the external drive infected everything else and we were back to square one, without internet access.
The way I got out of it is that I restored the system to its very initial status, without even any drivers. I only installed the network driver to have internet access. I was lucky and that worked.
Once with internet access, I could run bitdefender online and I was in for a surprise. It found a million instances of Gael.3666. I guess every single executable file was infected.

I'm not posting the report because it would be way to long, but it's like a million times of this:
E:\system volume information\_restore{2A933...} infected with Win32.Gael.3666
Some files were also infected by Win32.Zafi and Win32.Yahaa

Anyways, now the system seems to be working, 3 days later and after losing quite a lot of data
