I had some serious problems with trojans and spyware over the past week (look2me, CWS, Generic downloader etc)

While it looks much better now, I still get an unusual high number of (though low rated) hits whenever I run adaware, even after only visiting the highly reputable website of my employer.
Is there still something going on that my diverse programs missed?

Welcome to DAL,

You have Avast, Kaspersky and Mcafee running, you only need one anti-virus program running as slow downs and computer problems will arise if you leave it like this. So I suggest you uninstall all but your favorite one. Now on with the fix:

Do you use sygate personal firewall

Please download Ewido Anti-Malware

Install Ewido Anti-Malware
Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "BFU"

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to its own folder (c:\BFU)

Next, RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not run the Uninstaller and the Remover yet.

Please reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

*Click on Ewido>Scanner
Then select "Settings"
Under the bottom section "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is checked.
Select "OK" and you will return to scanning options.
*Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient .
While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Clean. Then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' . Doing this, enables the scan to proceed automatically until its completion. Click OK

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
** Make sure you know where to find this file again. The best place to save it would probably be your Desktop.
Now close Ewido Anti Malware.

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu

Press execute and let it do its job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check the following:

Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

Hi again, and many thanks

I tried to do as suggested, with some minor hitches:
After saving the exido report, the screen froze. I restarted, again in safe mode, and continued with running bfu, but did nor re-run ewido. Hope that was OK. (btw: ewido marginally did things differenntly: did not ask for action after first file was found, but only at the end for execution of all suggested activities)

I ran hijackthis, but three of the items I was supposed to check did not show up:

Just 2 quick follow ups:
I got curious regarding your question about my firewall and checked setting - worryingly, McAfee claims its Windows, and Windows Firewall is disabled and claims its McAfee - and neither allows me to change this. Not sure if this is the result of all the problem, or its cause, something for this forum or for another one on firewalls.

When I looked up the remove program folder to see if there was another firewall, I found a new item "Network Monitor" (Contact "customer support department") whose presence I can't explain, and I seem to remember that one of the nasties that were identified had a similar name - but maybe I'm getting paranoid

Runn hijackthis and click on scan button and put a check next to this:

Nothing open but HJT and click on fix checked.

Delete from safe mode explained earlier:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\explorer.exe

Sun java is way out of date and is a security risk as it is:

* Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
* Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
* Then Download and install the newest version from here:
Sun Java

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.
Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner", just use the windows tab up front by default.

Then Reboot (Exit)

Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

And a new HJT log please.

HI,

You have a couple persistent entries in hijackthis, let's see if BitDefender can clean them out.

Go here BitDefender and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post back and let us know what it found (post the log).

And post a new HJT log also..

Hi again

It took me some time getting bitdefender work (some virus unrelated browser issues) but I managed eventually. The scan came up negative - but whiel running it, McAfee claimed to have found a trojan that it couldnto delete (shoudl I have switched it off duringthe scan?)

You betcha,

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select
- "Delete on Reboot
- Then click on either the "All Files" button if there is more than 1 item to Delete.
Please copy the file path(s) below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Post a new hijackthis log, if those entries are gone after the above you should change passwords on everything and if you do any online banking or credit card transactions you should notify those companies that you are a possible identity theft victim.

Oh darn, that sounds bad

Problems with Killbox: di nothing when using "past from clipboard. I then used cut and paste, and the lines did appear in the form. But when pressing the delete file button, there was a countdown, and after that not aprompt for pending options, but a pop up saying: PendingFileRenameOperationRegistry data has been removed by external process!!

In the meantime, aol spyware zapper alerted me to the presence of Trojan-downloader.win32.small.bug

despite the problem with Killbox, here the Hijackthis log:
