Possible Adware Problem

Hi,

I wonder if you can help with this small problem I experience while browsing sites like Flurl.com and Metacafe. These are sites that share viral videos. While browsing the links there are placed ads on the page for girls of the adult friend finder variety. All the girls are availble in addresses in my local area so how do they know this information ie where I live. If its spyware or adware how do I get rid of it.

Its never picked up by Antivirus or Spycatcher Adaware or any other freeware I've used so far. I dont have any browser hijacks or pop ups. I just want to rid myself if its adware to free up space anfd performance.

Thanks for any help this is my first post

Re: Possible Adware Problem

This is potentially the consequence of a site tracking cookie. If you register at such a site, as given, you would likely have provided location info and a tracking cookie would match that info up each time you revisit that site.

[for XP based sytems or or similar]
The following tool often removes a large number of such tracking cookies when it scans:

Download and install Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 (uninstall any previous version first).
  • Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
  • Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
  • Open/Run ewido anti-spyware
  • Wait a few moments and Ewido should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

    Quote:
  • Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window
    • Click on the Start update button
    • Wait for the update to download and install
  • This is very important to get the LATEST updates
  • Click on the Status ICON
    • Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
  • Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  • Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
  • When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

We will be using this tool in a later step.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan:
  • Click on the default Status ICON and select the Scan now LINK.

    OR

  • Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan TAB.

    • Select Complete System Scan. Ewido will now begin to scan your system.

  • If Ewido finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the items found will be quarantined – and recoverable, if any items are needed back).

  • When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
  • Copy and paste the EWIDO scan results into your next post.
  • Close Ewido and REBOOT.

If you need to proceed more thoroughly beyond this step, please ensure that you have done the following READ FIRST Procedures found here:

Read This First - IMPORTANT Instructions

Re: Possible Adware Problem

Have your original issues currently been resolved?

No one general malware scanning tool nor most AV tools have a particularly good track record for finding ALL existing trojans. That is why dedicated trojan scanners and tools like EWIDO are a must for much needed second opinions when unknown causal issues still remain evident. Also, some/most? AV tools a not particularly effective at deep scanning inside of archived and compressed files (such a ZIP, ect.).

Several infections found by EWIDO are JAVA based infections. It is entirely possible that your JAVA may be out-of-date and STILL a current ongoing security risk issue. Post a HijackThis LOG and we should be to determine that, as well as any other potential issues not currently evident.

Do you happen to know what the purpose of that startup entry is for? Are you asked to go thru a login sequence at startup?

You may want to locate all FULL PATH occurances for winlogin.exe and submit to VirusTotal for their evaluation and immediate feedback:

http://www.virustotal.com/

Post any malware result specifics, if any are reported.

Hi
Give me a bit more direction on what to do with your instruction here please.

"You may want to locate all FULL PATH occurances for winlogin.exe and submit to VirusTotal for their evaluation and immediate feedback"

We dont have any requests to commence winlogin.exe at startup.

Do more at home later and get back to you.

Cheers

J

Re: Possible Adware Problem

The occurance of winlogin.exe (as a startup entry) is both an odd and a rarely seen occurance. The steps below may help to confirm the presence of malware in such a file(s).

Let say you locate (Start>Search) and submit files name like:

Quote:
HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here
[examples]
c:\windows\winlogin.exe
c:\windows\system32\winlogin.exe

See what VirusTotal has to report on such files.

Re: Possible Adware Problem

Feedback from VirusTotal on search of winlogin.exe.

I changed the settings of folders to search in but during search it was not looking in hidden files and folders despite my changing the options to do that, anyway here it is-

Your file "winlogin.exeCommon_Startup" is queued in position: 30. Estimated start time is between 171 and 257 seconds.

Antivirus Version Update Result

Aditional Information

VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.
