Small problem now large!

Hi guys,

This is my second time here; I was helped last time by Vincent and he did an amazing job. Since then (about 8 months ago) i have had no problems with my PC.

Then yesterday, I logged into one of my web-based email accounts and noticed that the font was unusually large. I tried another account and it was exactly the same. Since I had not changed any settings at all, I was immediately suspicious. The last hijack of my machine was nearly ruinous for me.

When I tried to run Norton Anti-virus, I was informed that live update was not updating and every time i tried to update I got an error message and was directed to Symantec's website. The recommended fix was to uninstall and re-install but this failled. I was now very suspicious and so I decided to do a number of checks.

I ran a number of spyware, adware, and virus detection programs that I now have and all came up with nothing. The programs I ran were: a-squared; ewido; hijackthis (see log below); Adaware SE; blbeta rootkit; norton; spybot S&D; and Webroot Spysweeper.

Still not convinced I did a system restore from Advanced System Optimizer that I also have running. Norton would still not update, so I unistalled it and re-installed it. This also included password manager.

To check that password manager and IE were still OK, I logged onto eBay and added my new password. All was fine.

Everything seemed OK until this morning when I restarted my machine and tried to log into eBay again. The home page came up but as soon as I tried to click through, IE disappeared. I tried again, this time the home page would last for a fraction of a second then IE disappeared. I logged on to another site, and the same thing happened - when I tried to click through, IE disappeared.

I tried to access 'add/remove programs' and the window appears briefly, and empty, before diappearing. My machine is now very, very slow and I can't access a couple of important programs. I have turned off a couple of my protection programs as I thought they might be fighting each other and slowing down my machine but this has had no effect - except perhaps to make me more vulnerable.

However, thankfully I listened to all of Vincent's advice and I now also have Mozilla - this is how I am managing to contact you now. So far, Mozilla seems unaffected.

I have since uninstalled Password Manager through the uninstall facility on the desktop (I thought it might be part of the problem) but no joy.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lets have a look at the obvious possible suspects:

Did you install or try the Kaspersky antivirus tool (not the online tool) at some point since we last talked. You could have a remaining remnant of it on your PC. Two AV tools on the same PC is generally not going to go well. Was it ever properly uninstalled:

Please check the folder to see if the C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 FOLDER is no longer there. If so, you should be able to fix that HJT line (as clutter), above.

Have you recently updated SpySweeper to the latest version 5 - some people have had or reported serious issues with it and have needed to uninstall it and revert back to the previous version for the time being.

The following entry is extremely odd:

Thank you for responding.

Between posting and your response I tried a couple of things. The one that seems to have had a significant effect is the uninstalling and re-installing of IE6. It now appears usable - i.e. it doesn't disappear- but I am still uncomfortable with it. I am also now able to access Add/Remove Programs through Control Panel.

Yes, I have recently updated SpySweeper to version 5.

Following your advice, I looked for and found Kaspersky still on my PC so I uninstalled it.

I submitted the file to VirusTotal and it came back with no virus found. It must be something to do with System Tweak in Advanced System Optimizer (ASO). VirusTotal provided the following additional information on the file:

This is what is happening on my machine now:-

Norton keeps popping up every 3 seconds to tell me that ISearch DNS is trying to attack my machine. Norton appears to be fending it off.

Microsoft Word refuses to respond; I tried to copy and paste your instruction to print but it was having none of it. I copied them to notepad instead.

I did a sweep with Webroot SpySweeper and it found 'trojan-downloader-ruin' and 'searchtoolbar'. It has quarantined them both.

AdAware SE got stuck at C:\WINNT\system32\wuaucpl.cpl

Spybot S&D takes an inordinate length of time to get past bot checks of CoolWWWSearch (and related). Spybot found 'Alexa Related' at C:\WINNT\Web\RELATED.HTM and I checked the box to fix the problem.

I ran HijackThis again and the log is below. I was suspicious because it no longer took as long as it used to (I run checks regularly now) at 015 - Trusted Zone Enumeration. I had previously thought that the reason it took so long at that point was because I now have an enormous Hosts file, but I don't know.

HJT does not physically check the HOSTS file so its size is irrelevant for purposes of that scan - the scan data is derived primarily from the registry.

AdAware SE (stops early on but doesn't freeze my system) and possibly also Spybot S&D doesn't perform very well or at all while SpySweeper (SS) is running (especially with shields on). In the options menu, turn off 'Load at Startup' or in the tasktray right-click on the SS ICON and select 'Shut Down'. I run all three tools, as well. However, I run the first two not because I heavily rely on them but because I need to monitor how they might behave for supported users.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Clean out TEMPORARY FILES:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Install Options:

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.

Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

Is Isearch still being found by Norton?

Is Norton now properly installed and working? If not,

Was Spysweeper (SS) installed after your issues with Norton? If so, suggest you uninstall SS and reboot. Then suggest you completely uninstall Norton, and then reboot and reinstall.

Do not reinstall SS until Norton is working satisfactorily. And then ONLY try installing in SAFE MODE.

I have not done anything yet as I wanted to check with you first. I already have both CCleaner and the Yahoo toolbar. Given this, should I uninstall both and reinstall CCleaner? Or just run CCleaner with the changes you have suggested and leave the Yahoo toolbar?

Isearch is still being found by Norton when I am on- and offline with the same monotonous regularity. I'm not sure if Norton is working properly but I can tell you that I didn't reinstall Password Manager. Liveupdate seems to be functioning again and there are no obvious problems.

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Norton, but I believe I did that when SpySweeper was still installed (I was afraid of leaving my machine completely unprotected). I don't have the CDs for SS or Norton - they were downloaded from the net and will have to be again. However, given that my subscription to Norton runs out in four weeks, are there better AV programs that you would recommend?

With Norton seemingly running OK, I doesn't sound like you need to reinstall anything.

Want to run CCleaner because Isearch leaves TEMPORARY files behind which could be used as reinfection agents (see if that helps). The Yahoo toolbar is your decision if its presence is being annoying.

As regards a new antivirus tool, my current favorite is NOD32. The top 5 or so contenders all are adequate antivirus tools (some may be somewhat bloated, slightly slower to respond with timely AV definition updates - 4 to 8 hours can make a big difference, or slower to run, etc.) - you just have to look at your own individual preferences. Thanks again. I did not respond yesterday because I have another (unrelated) problem with my PC: the power unit died.

There is a slim possibility that I can get a new power unit and thus continue with trying to remove this virus.

The alternative is a new PC. I have been told that my old HD can be installed in it as well so that I can retrieve the files that I need for my studies - I am a full-time student - but I am worried about infecting a new PC with the problem I am having at the moment. I value your advice - what would you do?

Given your recent reliable scans with Norton and other tools, I would say your risk factors are minimal. Viruses and malware are primarily resident in system files, TEMP files, and running DLLs and EXEs. Copying over, ONLY, your user-created files should generally be low risk and without incident. Just be sure that one of your first steps is a complete virus scan once those files have been transferred.
