about:blank

My homepage has been set to about:blank and is slowing down my computer. I have read some about it on the internet and tried CWS shredder but it keeps coming back. I have also tried to use my adaware program. It gets halfway throught the scan and throws up some kind of error message and them my computer completely shuts off (this program has always worked fine in the past)

I just wanted to add that now every time I shut down my computer something keeps trying to install on my computer.....it say windows installer HP product assistant....every time I click cancel it just keeps trying again. It took me almost an hour to get my internet to connect......please help!

I am still having the same issues. When I reboot I am still getting the windows installer HP product assistant window over and over again and I still have about:blank as my homepage. I downloaded the newer version of hijack this and removed what you asked. Here is my new log:

When I rebooted and Windows Installer HP product assistant started its craziness again I ended the process named hpqtra08.exe and it stopped it. Should I delete this file? If yes then how do I do that? I fixed the things you asked and about:blank is still there. Here is the new log:

By the way I noticed that two of the files you asked me to fix are still there.

Initially, we can fix the offending 'start' entry in HijackThis (see below).

If you are not using the (bundled?) imaging program, you could also check for an uninstaller in Add/Remove Programs for:

C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging

OR

UNINSTALLER Alternate SEARCH (if needed): Otherwise, you may have to first locate and then try right-clicking on any of the given SEARCH FOLDER items ABOVE and further search (tick include subdirectories) for the following exact text:

*UNIN*.EXE, *UNW*.EXE

This may reveal an uninstaller with label terms such as '...uninstall...EXE', ‘unins000’, or 'unwise.EXE'. Double-click that EXE, if one is found, to remove that particular FOLDER and its contents. Thereafter, check to ensure that the folder is completely gone. Otherwise, consider deleting the folder in question.



It is not now reflected in the HijackThis log. Try going to:

Tools>Internet Options>Home Page BOX

When you click on the link, select Save. Save it to your desktop. Once on the desktop: It appears as an icon that looks like a notebook tablet with a gear overlaid on it.


To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.


Note: Because this will remove all entries in both the Trusted Zone and the Restricted Zone, any program, tool, or settings that were previously used to set restrictions will need to be reset:

• Spybot's "Immunize" feature is affected, you will need to re-immunize
• SpywareBlaster's "Enable all protection" feature will have to be re-enabled
• IE-SPYADS will have to be reinstalled

• Close the program.

About blank is gone! Thankyou! I am still getting the HP installer popup. I tried what you suggested by fixing it with hijack this but I could not find any of those files you suggested deleting. Since I have never had this problem with HP installer I am wondering why it would all the sudden start now at the same time I aquired about:blank? It certainly appears to be a legitimate program that continues to be in your face. Fix the following additional HijackThis line and let us know if things improve:

O4 - Global Startup: HP Image Zone Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe



I gather you were unable to find an uninstaller or to delete the FOLDER:
C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging

Did you receive any error messages as a result?



You may want to do the following if there are still issues or concerns:
Let us see what is loaded on your PC:

• Run HijackThis and Click ‘Open the Misc Tools section’ button.
• Then click the ‘Open Uninstall Manager…’ button.
• Click the ‘Save list…’ button. Save uninstall_list to your desktop.
  
  
• Open the Uninstall list file and post in your next reply please.
