Hijack This Log

Hello - I'm a complete newbie to these Forums; but I've read the "red"
instructions, and am trying to follow the rules.

The IE6/SP2 browser on my XP/SP2 machine runs slowly, and displays
frequent "Cannot Display This Page..." messages. ad.doubleclick seems
to be main offender.

I have run Spybot and Adaware, and have installed MVPS Hosts file.
Only change so far is that IE6/SP2 loads much more slowly.

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:

• Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
• Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
• Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
• Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Before first use:
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner", just use the windows tab up front by default.


Then Reboot (Exit)






Download and install
Ewido anti-spyware
4.0 (uninstall any previous version first).

• Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the
  Download now BUTTON.
• Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
  
• Open/Run ewido anti-spyware
  
• Wait a few moments and Ewido should Auto update itself (note date of last
  update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of
  screen:

  Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window Click on the Start update button Wait for the update to download and install

• This is very important to get the LATEST
  updates
  
• Click on the Status ICON
  • Under "Your computers Security"
    Click change status on Resident shield to inactive
    (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are
    clean)
• Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  
• Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions
  and choose Quarantine

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start
Ewido, and run a full scan:

• Click on the default Status ICON and select
  the Scan now LINK.
  
  OR
  
  
• Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan
  TAB.
  
  
  • Select Complete System Scan. Ewido will now begin to scan your
    system.

• If Ewido finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
  • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows
    Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose
    Quarantine from the popup menu.
  • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the
    items found will be quarantined - and recoverable, if any items are needed
    back).
  
  
• When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button
  and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
• Copy and paste the EWIDO scan results into your next
  post.
• Close Ewido.

Go here BitDefender and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post back and let us know what it found (post the log).

And post a new HJT log also..

I think I have worked through the homework as given.
Specifically, I have:
1. Downloaded CCleaner, run, and rebooted.
2. Downloaded ewido-AVG, and run.
3. Run BitDefender online scan.
4. Rebooted.
5. Run HijackThis again.

The results are as follows:
1. CCleaner seemed to run well, and did its thing.
2. ewido-AVG also seemed to run well, but found
only one item. Log is copied below.
3. BitDefender ran well, but seemed to detect only
viruses previously quarantined by NAV.
Log is copied below.
4. Reboot was normal.
5. HJT also seemed to run well. Log is copied below.

To repeat from my OP, the main problem I am trying
to solve is the annoying "The Page Cannot Be Displayed"
messages on some of my IE6 pages. These are associated
with doubleclick. As I understand it, doubleclick tries to
fetch ads to put in these spaces; and some doubleclick
defenses operate by rerouting these calls back to your
own computer. But in my case, the calls go out to la-la
land somewhere, and the machine bogs down before
deciding to post that error message. That is actually
worse than the doubleclick ads, because the failed
fetches seem to take longer. As I mentioned, I had
hoped to fix this with a new hosts file; but it didn't work.

look at my problem.

Make sure nothing is open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.


Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.


Run CWShredder and click on fix.


After tool completes reboot normal mode and post a new hijackthis log. Thanks.

Hi again Neal, thanks for your message.

I followed the procedures in your new post; new HJT log is copied below.

Alas, previous round of procedures completely scrambled Compaq's
browser hotkeys. I will contact Compaq tech support and try to reset
them. "Page Cannot Be Displayed..." occurences now seem somewhat
worse, as at least one OTHER doubleclick-type ad linker is ALSO going
off to la-la land.

I hope the new HJT log helps. Might it be time to consider a brute force
approach such as updating entire browser to IE7?

None of those fixes had anything to do with hotkeys.

That hijackthis log is clean now.

Hi Neal,

First, I must do a "True Confession": I have been posting as Janice,
my lovely wife, because I wanted to help her fix her machine while
keeping a low profile. Alas, my cover is blown, for reasons which
will become clear.

Second, I want to thank you for your help, and the time you have
generously given to us in trying to help. Nothing that follows should
be read as a lack of appreciation.

Our present status is that our HJT log is cleaner, and we got rid of
one more doubtful intruder with ewido-AVG. That's the good news.

The bad news is that we haven't made a dent in the misdirected
doubleclick calls that are producing our annoying "The Paqe Cannot
Be Displayed..." messages; and that was our main issue. Also,
it appears that the CCleaner step blew away all our cookies, good
and bad. This caused my wife to lose all her stored logins, which
she has been painstakingly reconstructing. In the case of the bank,
we had to define a new account, because of some wierd way they
handle lost logins. This has gotten her VERY upset, and she has
banned me from any further efforts to solve the doubleclick problem.

I respectfully suggest that when advising people to run CCleaner
(with the defaults), you also caution them about the problems that
can result from deleting desired cookies. They could then think
about cost vs. potential benefit before proceeding.

As to the blown hotkeys, ONE of these steps definitely knocked
them out, because they were working before. Old Compaq Presario
hotkeys use some kind of wierd, web-defined settings. Perhaps
they also involved cookies. In any case, they don't work now, and
the Compaq web links we used to define them don't seem to work
anymore. I will probably just buy my wife a new keyboard with
sensible, locally-defined hotkeys, to get out of the doghouse on
this one.

As a parting request, I would appreciate your advice on a really
good and safe registry cleaner for XP Home. This machine has
never had a registry cleaning. And I know from years of maintaining
my Win2K machine (using the mediocre Fix-It Utilities registry tool)
that LOTS of registry errors accumulate over time.
