I'm just wanting to know what is bad in this log. I'm fairly certain I have a virus of some sort, but I've run 2 different anti-virus programs and found nothing.

I can't see any evidence in there of a virus infection. Running two antivirus programs is not a good idea. Choose one or the other. I'd personally go for PC-Cillin over Norton Antivirus (I use PC-Cillin myself).

What makes you think your infected with a virus?

Thanks for the reply. I ran hijackthis again and checked the items you said to fix, but the last one still shows up on a subsequent scan. (09 Extra button: Your PC is infected with spyware...)

I think my computer has a virus:

1. because I tried to run adaware a few days ago and I got an autoshutdown message while adaware was flagging hundreds of files. I went to the ms website and thought it sounded like the blaster worm so I downloaded the fix and servicepack 2. I rebooted and ran adaware again. I still got the ntauthority error. I killed the autoshutdown and let adaware run completely. I deleted all the things that appeared to be spyware and adaware has been running fine since then.

2. Since all of this occurred I have received emails from my isp stating that it appears I have a trojan of some sort because large quantities of email are being sent from my email. I don't know if I should mention that I don't actually use my email account from my isp, but it is on my email client. I don't know when the emails were sent because the isp didn't specify.

3. Almost every program I try to use starts not responding after a few minutes. This has only been happening during the last week. During times that it locks up I'm not running that many progs, but it shows in the task manager a 100% cpu usage and lists approx. 70 running processes. I suppose the lockup could be something caused by having both anti-virus proggies on the computer at once.

It is possible that the steps I took with the fix and service pack got rid of any virus, but I want to be sure.


As far as the two virus scans, I didn't have both activated until after this happened. When one couldn't find anything I tried the other. I'll disable one now.

It sounds like Sasser to me, but installing XP Service Pack 2 will have fixed the vulnerability Sasser exploits. Blaster shuts down Svchost.exe, Sasser shuts down lsass.exe. This is what causes the shut down message.

As for the Trojan and email from your ISP, could you possibly send me a copy of the email your ISP sent you and the full message headers (Right click the email in Outlook Express and select Properties. Click the details tab and copy and paste the info there). I want to check if this is definetly from your ISP. It is possible that your PC could have been turned into a zombie which means it is remotely controlled and allows a hacker to send spam and use your PC without your knowledge. There isn't any evidence of a zombie in your log, but it may well have been removed by a program.
