Laptop slow beyond tolerance

Have you made any recent changes or loaded new software on your PC?



You should clean out your temporary files:

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.




Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (AVG AS - formally known as Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 - uninstall any previous version first).

• Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
• Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
  
• Open/Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  
• Wait a few moments and AVG Anti-Spyware should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

  Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window Click on the Start update button Wait for the update to download and install

• This is very important to get the LATEST updates.
  
• Click on the Status ICON
  • Under "Your computers Security"
    Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
• Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  
• Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
• When updating has finished. Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

We will be using this tool in a later step.




Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

• If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
• Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
• Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
• Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
• Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
• Login on your usual account.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware , and run a full scan:

• Click on the default Status ICON and select the Scan now LINK.

• Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan TAB.
  
  
  • Select Complete System Scan. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin to scan your system.

• If AVG Anti-Spyware finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
  • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
  • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the items found will be quarantined – and recoverable, if any items are needed back).
  
  
• When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
• Copy and paste the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results into your next post.
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

REBOOT and Post your latest HijackThis log. And, let us know how your PC is now behaving – any changes in behavior.

Thanks! I can not recall any recent changes or installs. Here is a bit of background info that might be beneficial. My laptop is 6 months old. After I had it for 3 months it froze fort some reason and I had to cold boot it. After I did that I got an XP equivalent of a blue screen saying something about disc inconsistency and asking to perform a system check. I let it do its thing and finish the process. When the boot finished, the machine was slow as molasses - i mean i could click on windows explored and go get a cup of coffee. I also noticed that the CPU was always between 80-90% on one processor and around 30-40% on the other (duo processor) even though I had no programs running! Since I had extended waranty on the machine I took it to the store where they ran all the memory and hardware tests (which showed nothing) and told me to wipe it!!!!!!!!

After a VERY long weekend, I was back to square one but my laptop was back to normal. All the software that I have installed in MS. Imagine my disgust and frustration when I turned it on last Monday and all the symptoms were back.

As far as security goes, I had ad-aware, spywareblaster and Zonealart from the start and scanned and updated religiously.

Ok - enough blab. Here is the latest hijackthis log. I sure hope you see something here. I did all you suggested, deleted temp files and run AVG scan which found NOTHING.

There is no change in behavior. The laptop still take 5 minutes to boot. CPU still hovers around 50% (average) and the overall response time is very slow.

I checked in the Task manager and its over developed cousin Process explorer. Unfortunately neither one shows any active processes. The boot up sequence still takes 5-7 minutes and once start up is finished the processes hover around 30% on average with 50% regular periodic spikes every 8 to 10 seconds. What is the 'commit charge' statistic for your PC (Task Manager - Process TAB)?


Something has to be showing for 'CPU Usage'.

Did you sort (click on the) CPU column in Task Manager (Processes TAB) until it shows highest to lowest CPU % utilization?

Does 'Process Explorer' show any SIGNIFICANT PERIODIC CPU activity labelled 'Deferred Procedure Calls' (DPCs - sort on the Process column)?




Have you considered going back to previous restore point:

Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes?

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.
