Rundll32.exe problem; hijacked?

Sorry for double posting but I mistakenly posted this XP problem in the Windows ME forum. Please see below for the hijackthis log. I also forgot to mention that I used Windows Update to download all critical patches. Thank you!

ok, a couple of days ago my mom calls and says that her computer died. She had called Dell and they sent the restore CD's for WinXP SP2, by the time I get to the machine it's not dead, it's just not letting her log into windows.

The only thing it will do is boot up say that you have to activate windows and when you hit yes it just logs you off and says you have to activate windows. an evil loop. I found a technet article that said to just reinstall windows using the repair current installation option. That got rid of the activation loop.

Now I am stuck at this problem. "Cannot Locate RUNDLL32.exe" whenever I try to use the control panel. I have expanded the file from the WinXP SP2 CD over and over in both safe mode and normal mode I have downloaded the version listed in the link above and still every time I try to open a control panel item I get the error.

I have updated and run spybot and adaware, both of which removed hundreds of objects. The McAfee Security Center that she has installed is all whacked out and the manual virus scan button is missing. I did remove the hard drive and put in my old computer I'm using as a lab machine and scanned her drive with Symantec Antivirus and found nothing.

Any suggestions?

I'd prefer to just format the stupid thing and start fresh, but she has a lot of programs that I'm not sure we could find the installation CD's.

I sat patiently for a week waiting for a response, yet this guy ugh!! plz help (RESOLVED) who keeps coming back and complaining about how long it took to get a response gets a response first even though he entered his log a day later than mine.

Your rules state to be patient and don't try to bump your post. So if you play by the rules you get ignored?

Re: Rundll32.exe problem; hijacked?

Sorry, I have not intentionally ignored any post.

I have been mostly by myself lately for over a month and very busy with my work and house renovations (sewer and furnace).

Some posters have clearly identifiable and resolvable issues that can be addressed very easily with a limited number of posts. Certain posted issues do not present any suggestive identifiable pattern that might be clearly resolved without extensive and often unproductive efforts to the problem. I prioritize accordingly and then something unfortunately may get missed.

I will have another look when I get a chance this weekend. For those problems I have never seen before, such problems may not be easily resolved if at all. I just may not have the answers that you are seeking.

Re: Rundll32.exe problem; hijacked?

Believe me, I understand that this isn't your full time job and that's why I tried to be patient. Since this is such a difficult problem, unlike any I've seen before either, I have decided to back the system up, format and reload from the Dell installation cd's.

Thanks anyways.
