IEXPLORE.EXE stealing all my resources - HJT log (RESOLVED)

Hi,

My laptop has suddenly become quite slow, and I have checked windows task manager a couple of times only to discover that there are at least three different IEXPLORE.EXEs, two of which are taking up at least 22,000k of memory as well as about six svchost.exes, one of which is taking up over 17,000k of memory.
I have searched the forum before posting this but couldn't really find anything that would directly help me so sorry if this has been posted before. I did try to do the recommended cleaning etc in the HJT post at the top of the forum as well.

Have you made any recent security tool changes away from Symantec in favor of AVG? What other recent software changes have you made on this PC?

You appear to be running a VPN (indicated by odsp.dll) and several fixable malware indicated items that may be responsible for one or more of the noted instances.

Quote:

Many instances of this file is normal on WinXP. There is nothing that would currently indicate a problem for what you have observed.

You are not running HijackThis (HJT) from a desired location. You really need to setup a dedicated folder for HJT items – to avoid horrible clutter and/or potential lost backup issues.

It's best that the HijackThis tool NOT be located in its current location (particularly on your Desktop or in a TEMP folder). This way you can more easily undo any changes if something goes wrong.

Create a new folder in your C: Drive.
Name the FOLDER HijackThis (or HJT) such as C:\Program Files\HijackThis or C:\HJT and
Move the HijackThis.exe file into the newly created FOLDER.
Run HJT from there (and revise your shortcut accordingly).

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Also,
Let us see what is loaded on your PC:

Run HijackThis and Click ‘Open the Misc Tools section’ button.
Then click the ‘Open Uninstall Manager…’ button.
Click the ‘Save list…’ button. Save uninstall_list to your desktop.
Open the Uninstall list file and post in your next reply please.

Well I've just checked my running processes and IEXPLORE.EXE is still there using almost 30,000K of memory. Though saying that my laptop seems to have started up a bit quicker and is running quicker...

Not recently, but a while ago I did get rid of norton antivirus because all it did was seem to cause problems, and then I installed AVG instead...apart from that I'm not aware of any other software changes...it depends what you mean exactly by software changes. I installed Nero 7 not that long ago but then uninstalled it and now, even though it's been uninstalled, if I put a CD or some kind of removable drive into my laptop and those options come up (i.e. play media with windows media, open folder to view files etc) there are still options referring to Nero. How do I get rid of these?
Oh and maybe one other thing, I think I uninstalled some part of the sonic digital media program that came with my laptop but that wasn't that recently either.

Sounds like you are now down to one instance of IE - still potentially related to VPN (Aventail Corporation VPN)? Do you knowingly still have such a tool running. It is potentially used for remote access and support:

You still appear to elements of Symantec Tools running that are likely no longer needed:

Nope not as far as I know. In fact, I don't think I've ever even heard of that tool! Strange...

Ok well I removed Norton Security Center, but when I went to remove LiveUpdate 2.6 it said that it had detected another component of Symantec Tools still installed or something and I shouldn't remove LiveUpdate until all components are gone (which I thought they were?). So I didn't remove it...thought I would ask your advice first. Also, I couldn't remove neroxml because it doesn't appear on my add/remove programs list. Is there a way of removing it using HJT?

I removed all of the following:

Ah, yeah I was wondering whether to ask you about the Citrix client...I don't ever remember installing it, and I don't remember it coming already installed on my laptop either...had a quick look at the link you provided, but it goes over my head a little bit...I'm not sure if I need it or not, but if it isn't doing any harm then maybe I can just...leave it there?

Also, just had a quick look at my running processes...IEXPLORE.EXE there using 36,000K of mem. Should I be concerned or is it all ok now? It's just I never remember seeing a process like this on my laptop using that much memory all the time.

Not knowing how it was setup or the correct uninistall and related procedures, I would suggest you not mess with it. You could end up breaking your Internet connection.
