about blank.

Hiya , new here so be gentle. I have a problem with about blank and it's starting to drive me nuts , I run SpyBot S&D , AdAware SE , Blackice desktop protection , Windows Defender and BT Yahoo antispy but to no avail , I also notice that BT's antispy has not updated since October 2006 and AdAware tries to update but often repies no new definitions availlable , Windows Defender finds an Adware HotBar and successfully removes this but returns after every scan. I have also noticed that SpyBot and AdAware can take upto 4 hours to run.
Also my antivirus recently changed from EZantivirus to CAantivirus and I don't think these antivirus programs are finding viruses as well as should be last one was Malum MW*** something or other.
Please help as my laptop is running ridiculously slow , and I am virtually unable to dowload any freeware antispy or antivirus.

Thanks in advance.

Re: about blank.

Can you download Hijack This maybe from another computer and get it to the infected computer via memory stick/cd? If so get it below.
  1. Let's get a Hijack This log to analyze.
    • Create a new folder on your desktop and name it HJT.
    • Please follow this link to get Hijack This.
    • Save Hijack This to your newly created folder.
    • Run Hijack This.
    • Click Scan and save log file.
    • Copy the log to this thread.

Re: about blank.

Hello again Chezi.

I see remnants of McAfee's Anti-Virus there along with CA's AV. That may be part of the problem. Running more than one Real-Time AV can cause all kinds of trouble. Which one would you prefer to keep? Is either one a paid subscription? Let me know on this.

Let's get a couple things with Hijack This and see if things improve enough to get a scan in. Download (via whatever method you used for HJT) ATF Cleaner below and run it as well.
  1. Let's get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
    • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
    • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
    • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post, along with any other requested logs.
  2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below being careful to get only these:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...o/bt_side.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Exit Hijack This.
  3. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
  4. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  5. Post Logs
    • Uninstall List
    • New Hijack This Log

Re: about blank.

Hiya , first up I subscribe to CA antivirus and foolishly reinstalled a McAfee disc yesterday to see if this would help , subsequently it didn't and I would like to rid my computer of the McAfee if this is possible. I also have a lappsed Spy Sweeper adware program that prompts me not to uninstall when I was going to "clean" my programs up a bit. Dunno if this helps but thought I had better mention it.

Re: about blank.

Hi chezi.

My understanding of SpySweeper is that it will continue to clean but will not take updates. Up to you if you want to keep it. It is indeed a fine program but I think it uses up a little too much of the computers resources. I can give you some free alternatives that do just as good a job, IMO. I'll list SpySweeper below as optional.
  1. Remove Questionable Programs. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to and highlight each of the following programs and select uninstall/remove:
    • McAfee SecurityCenter
    • McAfee VirusScan
    • ToolbarSetup

  2. Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a new HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Re: about blank.

Hello again Chezi.

Let's get a couple more things and see if that helps any.

You may want to print out these instructions as you will not be able to access them online during part of the fix.
  1. Download the AVG Anti-Spyware Installer to you Desktop.
    • Find the icon on your desktop and double click on it to install.
    • Let AVG AS open once it is installed.
    • The first thing you need to do is update the detection definition files.
    • From the main AVG AS screen, click on UPDATE in the top menu, then click the Start Update link.
    • After the update finishes (the status bar near the top will inform you of progress), click on the Scanner button in the top menu, then click on the Settings tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    • Close AVG AS.
  2. Please submit the following file to VirusTotal for scanning.

    C:\WINDOWS\up.bat

    VirusTotal File Scan

This will produce a report after the scan is complete, please copy and paste those results in your next post.
  3. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below being careful to get only these:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RlG5tr] c:\documents and settings\chezi\local settings\temp\RlG5tr.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Exit Hijack This.
  4. Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  5. Delete Files/Folders
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

    c:\documents and settings\chezi\local settings\temp\RlG5tr.exe
  6. Open AVG AS and click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    • If AVG AS finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  7. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
  8. Reboot to normal mode.
  9. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  10. Post Logs
    • VirusTotal Results
    • AVG AS Results
    • New Hijack This Log

Re: about blank.

Hiya, I downloaded the AVG AS set-up and when running the setup I got a folder and the anti virus icon on my desktop , but I got a prompt saying something bad had happened during setup , however the anti viru opened but would not respond , iI tried again and was prompted "The procedure entry point GETPROCESSIMAGEFILE NAME W could not be located in the Dynamic Link Library PSAPI.DLL , this is also a prompt I get during reboot , this has been happening for a while.
I will try and re-load AVG AS tomorrow as its getting late and I have been at this for a few hours trying to rectify the AVG AS.

Regards
chezi

Re: about blank.

Hi Chezi.

Go ahead and delete the AVG AS file you downloaded and then redownload and try the install again (just incase it was a faulty download). Also, check the add/remove programs list and see if it's listed there. If so, remove it via the add/remove programs option and try the above.

Also, I forgot to address your earlier question/statement:

Quote:
I am unable to locate a Toolbar set-up for McAfee.
Toolbar is not related to McAfee. It is a seperate entry in the uninstall list:

SiS VGA Utilities
Spy Sweeper
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
ToolbarSetup<-----This one.
Update for Windows XP (KB894391)
Update for Windows XP (KB896727)
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)

Go ahead and uninstall that one and post the results of the AVG step when you can.
