Exclamation MSN virus

I got this virus that is working its way thru the Windows LIVE messenger world just yesterday. Can anyone help me stop this thing? I've warned all my online contacts that I could but I'm stuck with this stupid thing until I can figure out how to get rid of it.

Here's what I've done thus far
Turned off System Restore
Ran Spybot, Adware, AVG Free, Windows LIVE One Care online scanner

Here's my HiJackThis log

I have this stupid WinPro Antivirus spyware that keeps popping up too whenever I have a browser window open (I usually use Opera). I am not clicking ANYTHING without being sure its legit. I just close that window along with any others it tries to trick me with "ie: Error Safe".

I hope I provided any info I can that will help.

Re: MSN virus

Let deal with the virus, first. Did AVG pick this one up, but can't as yet remove it permanently.

See if the following links are helpful:

Otherwise, please post the name(s) of any suspect files.

Re: MSN virus

AVG spotted it right away and warned me... and it continues to warn me. I tried to "heal" but that didn't work... sending it to the virus vault doesn't seem to do anything either. Every 20 min or so it pops up and warns me again.

The list of viruii I have are
Trojan horse Downloader.Generic 4. DEM
Trojan horse Collected.11B
Trojan horse Generic3.QLS

Re: MSN virus

The specific names that a vendor uses are often not very useful. Better to search on SPECIFIC filenames to find out who else is dealing with the files in question. Even better, is to submit those files to a multi-tool engine evaluation service like VirusTotal:

Quote:
HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see any and all hidden files, please follow the directions here

Submit the following file(s) to VirusTotal for their immediate evaluation and feedback. Use any of the following methods, as appropriate:
  • Copy & Paste in the input BOX, and/or ..…
  • Locate FULL FILE PATH if not apparent, or
  • Navigate to file in question.

Post those results in your next reply:

Re: MSN virus

While I'm not a novice computer user, I'm having some difficulty using that link. This virus has since disabled my AVG by either removing or corrupting this file "MFC71.DLL" which both avgcc.exe and logitray.exe both require to run apparently...
I have uninstalled AVG and reinstalled and it seems to be working. logitray stilll warns me about this .dll

I have found out more info that might be more useful however... these are the filenames of what is causing me and my computer grief (so far)

oo.exe & net.exe
(these 2 also both open a command prompt window and then another window opens warning me that I have a ntvdm CPU error )
msrr.exe
install.exe
nfomon.exe
vidmon.exe
svchosts.exe (I know svchost.exe is fine but this one has an S)

Since then I have ran spyware programs until I'm seeing red and AVG over and over... all in safe mode. I also disabled msrr, nfomon, vidmon in msconfig from running at every startup. I've deleted the files when the path was available and I think install.exe & svchosts.exe is gone but oo, msrr, net, nfomon... they're all driving me insane.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. This is the 3rd day I've been down with this now and I'm growing weary so please be gentle...

Use the 'WINDOWS+F' KEYS to bring up the file search dialogue. Type the filenames to locate their filepath for submission to VirusTotal. Several of the named files can be different types of infection depending on filepath location (e.g.: C:\WINDOWS\system32\oo.ex). Msrr.exe and install.exe are not generally found to be infected files - the scans will help confirm or deny that. Anyway, do the following scans first:

Download deldomains:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
When you click on the link, select Save. Save it to your desktop. Once on the desktop: It appears as an icon that looks like a notebook tablet with a gear overlaid on it.

To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Note: Because this will remove all entries in both the Trusted Zone and the Restricted Zone, any program, tool, or settings that were previously used to set restrictions will need to be reset:
Examples: (if these are being used),
  • Spybot's "Immunize" feature is affected, you will need to re-immunize
  • SpywareBlaster's "Enable all protection" feature will have to be re-enabled
  • IE-SPYADS will have to be reinstalled

Get HostsXpert here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip
  • Unzip it to a convenient place and run the program.
  • If you see in the top BOX (Editing Tools) ‘Your Hosts file is editable’ then press the ‘Restore Microsoft’s Original Hosts File’ button (in the Backup and Restore Tools BOX) and OK.
  • If you see red text (‘Hosts file is marked as read only’) then press the ‘Make Hosts Writeable’ button - then the Restore Original Hosts button and OK.
  • Close the program.

Clean out TEMPORARY FILES procedures:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Install Options:
  • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
  • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to the words Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update successful message.
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar at top of this screen.
    • Click on the Settings tab.
      • Under How to act?
        • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Under How to scan?
        • All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Possibly unwanted software:
        • All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Reports:
        • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • Under What to scan?
        • Select Scan every file.
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware without running yet.
Now disable (turn off AVG Anti-Spyware)
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon (Bottom right corner of computer screen near clock) and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon again and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Re: MSN virus

I've also run yet another AVG virus scan and it found the following file as a threat.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\install.exe

Suggest you ensure that logitray.exe has \LOGITECH\ as part of its filepath name. Normally, such a DLL might be expected to reside at ( http://fileinfo.prevx.com/filesearch...arch=MFC71.DLL ):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MFC71.DLL

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\install.exe
Install.exe is such a common filename that you really need to understand the nature of the infection through feedback from a source such as VirusTotal and further research for possible associated files.

Re: MSN virus

I tried that tool earlier tonight but the file isn't there to browse to even though AVG keeps saying thats the path. So how do I send the file when its not technically there to send?

I checked that file path and there is no file there called specifically MFC71.dll
There are several similar but none of that one.
