Unhappy Cleaned SMITFRAUD ?? - help confirming...

Hello

I started having problems with IE that Norton (updated) haven't discovered. I ran Search&Destroy and found the SMITFRAUD Toolbar.

Ever since, I've been searching the web and reading yours and other forums, using AVG Anti-spyware, smitfraud fix, hijackthis and cclean.
When I thought it was over, after analysing Hijack report, avg anti-spyware resulting in nothing found, and cclean cleaned, I found via Search&Destroy the SmitFraud again.

Is this a software related issue or is an infection that doesn't heal?
If you could be so kind to help me analyse whatever you need to figure out if I'm clean or not, I'd be very thankful.

Please tell me what reports I must post (or remake) and if it should be from a safemode boot.

Thanks in advance for the time and help.

THere have been previous false findings before:
Quote:
1) If you are talking about this: Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 it is a false positive and you can ignore it.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668

Add any additional search terms, as appropriate, for the infection name given:

EXAMPLE: 60K hits down to 300

Re: Cleaned SMITFRAUD ?? - help confirming...

Thanks VopThis for the quick answer.

I've read about the false positives but fortunatelly, it was after doing all the other stuff since with avg anti-spyware I found also a downloader and an hijack.

I'll assume that what SpyBot Search&Destroy finds now is a false positive (thanks again for your post).
However I'd highly appreciate some help to make sure all the other threads were destroyed.

Tnx

Re: Cleaned SMITFRAUD ?? - help confirming...

Post your latest HijackThis LOG. A review of that and given the list of scans that you have already run (e.g.: AVGAS), and a lack of obvious issues should generally mean that things are acceptible.

You could continue to run tools but the 'law of diminishing returns' result in a situation where most additional findings are liable to be inconsequential or even debatable (and not an obvious problem that most reliable/reputable tools will find and resolve 99% of the time). You really need to have remaining known issues in order to justify further pursuit of your concerns. Is smitfraud still there - most unlikely given the tolls that you have run and a lack of ongoing symptoms?

Re: Cleaned SMITFRAUD ?? - help confirming...

Hello

This this is the last hijackthis report I have (made after the cleaning process).

The only remaining issue was the spybot result that I assumed, from your answer, was a false positive. Other than that, everything seems ok by now (however, I was only havinf problems with IE and I usually use Firefox...).

Thanks for the help

It is not safe to assume anything especially when you did not indicate the 'item name' nor did you appear to use the link I gave to see what others may have had to say about it (if anything).

THe following line item may be an orphan or dead registry entry.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, see if you can click the icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Post the Dr. Web CureIt Results and a revised HijackThis LOG.
