Re: Hijack Log

Hello Johanus.

I have looked over your log and see that you are running two AV's. This is not a good thing and can cause all kinds of problems. However, I don't know what kind of problem you have so I don't know if it will resolve any issue that you may be experiencing.

Please decide if you would like to keep Norton's or AVG Free and let me know about any problems you are having and I'll see what I can do.

Be specific please as I can't help if you don't tell me what's wrong.

Hello Scott,

Thankyou for your reply, sorry for my delay in answering.

To the best of my knowledge I'm not running two AVs and wouldn't.

The only Norton product I have installed which I can see and was a freebe' and is now proving a sod to uninstall is Norton's Ghost 10.

I can see it in add/remove but it won't uninstall it.

I'm not a Norton fan and prefer AVG and use it regularly.

Re: Hijack Log

Try this to remove the Norton's product:
  1. Follow the instructions on this page to remove any and all Norton's products from your system.
  2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  3. Post Logs
    • New Hijack This Log

I am not a Norton's fan either and think you are making the right decision with AVG. It is a very god AV. Doesn't use nearly the resources that Norton's does.

Let me know about any other problems you are having. Be specific.

I have no other problems, well a couple of small ones but I'll tyr to deal with them.

I do have one major concern, a key logger.

I run AV, Spybot, Ad-Ware, I did have A-Square, nothing showing and I run these on a monthly basis except for AV, which runs once a week.

I'm not completly convinced, about four months ago, I was tidying the Desk Top and this window popped up for around 10 seconds stating " Key Logger Installed", nothing else.

Being a good DAL user I did what you tech' guys are constantly telling us to do.

I turned off system restore, disconected from the net, ran a complete scan, using the programes above, then again in safe mode, nothing, zilch, so why do I still feel a little uneasy.

Yesterday I ran AVs free rootkit finder, nothing, I'm being silly arn't I?

Re: Hijack Log

Sorry for the delay Johanus. I didn't get an automatic notification of your reply.

Let's have a deeper look just to be sure.
  1. Kaspersky Online Scanner
    Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Note: This Scan requires Internet Explorer to run.
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post along with any other requested logs.
  2. Download GMER
    • Unzip it to the desktop.
    • Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
    • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
    • Click on Scan.
    • When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.
  3. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  4. Post Logs
    • Kaspersky Results
    • gmer Results
    • New Hijack This Log

Re: Hijack Log

That log looks good Johanus.

The Kaspersky scan found nothing and gmer looks clean. I'd say you're all set.

Congratulations. Your system is clean of Malware.

Below is my standard closing speech. You may already have some of these programs and/or performed some of these steps. Use what you can and skip the rest.
  1. Please re-hide hidden files. (If applicable)
Follow the directions you used earlier to show hidden files and undo the changes you made so that hidden files are actually hidden once again.
  2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
  3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.
    • The easiest and safest way to do this is:
      • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
      • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
      • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
      • Click "OK".
      • Click the "More Options" Tab.
      • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
  4. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
    • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
    • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  5. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:
    • If you already have a software firewall, you can skip this step.
  6. You should also have a good Anti-Virus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.
  7. To keep your operating system up to date you should do a windows update monthly. Here's the link:
  8. And to keep your system clean, run these free malware scanners weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
  9. To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?
Safe Surfing!

Re: Hijack Log

Hi Scott,

Thank you for all your efforts, I feel much easier now.

I wonder what that key logger window was, I don't suppose I will ever know.

I've got so much rubish on this PC, I think a clean install is called for some time in the next few months, that should take care on any lingering doubts I have.

But for now, I shall just rest easy.
Johanus

I can honestly say I don't know. It may have been removed by your AV without informing you..

A clean install is a good thing now and again. I myself like to do it every so often to really get rid of things I don't need anymore.

Just be sure to back up everything (ie. Documents, Pictures and the like). Just don't back up programs. Those would be best just re-downloaded and reinstalled.

If you have any more problems, come back and see us.
