Angry IO 7 - suspicious default web page (RESOLVED)

Hey,

Hope you can help. I'm pretty useless at this pc stuff!

When I start IO7 my default web page has changed to www.virushelpzone.com.

I have followed your advice, although experiencing the following problems: hijackthis - tried to install, programme wone exceute. when i double click the exe file it freezes the screen. Spybot search & destroy wont work either, I have installed but it wont check for updates.

I am using windows defender, latest AVG anitvirus, avg anti-spyware 7.5, spyware bot and latest version of Ad-aware SE. All of these pick up what I think is the problem file , the file is removed by the programmes but comes back every time i restart the pc. These are what they pick up:

Windows defender - Settings Modifier - Medium alert level - C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

AVG scan -virus hosts found - Object - C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

SpywareBot - Type - Registry - Downloader - agent - hkey_local_machine\software\windows\currentversion \run@^lsass

Adaware se -

Re: IO 7 - suspicious default web page

Try resetting the HOSTS file back to original default. Let us know if that helped.

Get HostsXpert here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip
  • Unzip it to a convenient place and run the program.
  • If you see red text (‘Make Writeable?’) then press the ‘Make Writeable?’ BUTTON.
  • Click ’Restore MS Hosts File’ BUTTON.
  • You will be asked to confirm ’Press OK to Restore Microsofts original Hosts File’. Click ’OK’ BUTTON.
  • Close the program.

Otherwise,

Post a HijackThis LOG as per instructions found here:

Re: IO 7 - suspicious default web page

Hey,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have tried the Hostsexpert link a few times and it hasn't worked. Every time I restart the pc my virus/spyware programmes find the same problem.

I have tried to run hijack this, The programme wont run either! When I double click on the exe file the screen will flash and bring back the tool bar with half the programmes I had oppened missing. I have nearly been able to bring it up but it only lasts on screen for a few seconds.

Whats going on!?

Thanks

What is the full filename and PATH of the suspected file?

Let us see/review what is loaded on your PC:
  • Run HijackThis and Click ‘Open the Misc Tools section’ button.
  • Then click the ‘Open Uninstall Manager…’ button.
  • Click the ‘Save list…’ button. Save uninstall_list to your desktop.

  • Open the Uninstall list file and post in your next reply please.

See if you can run the following one minute scan:

www.nanoscan.com

Quote:

try renaming the file to MWSCAN. Some malware actually looks for and blocks certain programs by name.

Alternatively, try running that scan in SAFE MODE (reboot tapping F8 KEY).

AND lastly,

Your best option might be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes?

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

REBOOT.

Hello again.

From your advice I could run nanoscan, it didn't find anything. System restore is not available, although I can't recall turning it off?!

I could run hijack this in safe mode, log file below:

Re: IO 7 - suspicious default web page

NOTE: If any of the removals do not appear to be possible try ending the applicable running process in 'Task Manager' (Ctrl+Alt+Delete KEYS).

Uninstall the following ROGUE application in 'Add/Remove Programs" (Control Panel) or delete the applicable FOLDER:

SPYWAREBOT
http://www.castlecops.com/modules.ph...ery=SPYWAREBOT

Also, delete the following FOLDER

C:\WINDOWS\system32\joofdca

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\joofdca\lsass.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\joofdca\lsass.exe

**********FIX all entries with O1 - HOSTS
(Such entries are denying access to most legitimate anti-malware sites)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SPYWAREBOT] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SPYWAREBOT] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

Re: IO 7 - suspicious default web page

Hey,

I have followed your good advice and things seem to be getting better now.

I couldn't find the file: *C:\WINDOWS\system32\joofdca* to delete. Hope this doesn't matter?

When I rebooted my IO7 still defaulted to www.virushelpzone.com, however I have removed this from the internet options and hopefully it won't come back. I will keep you posted if it does.

On the positive side, I can now: run hijack this in normal mode (before I had to use safe mode), run spybot S&D (this wouldn't work before), zone alarm now executes on start up(I was previously having trouble getting the programme to run), I have run a scan with AVG and it did not pick up the virus.

The hijack this log after I followed your instructions is as follows: (ps the only line I couldnt find to fix was: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SPYWAREBOT] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot).

Good to hear that everything is mostly back to normal.

It is probably a hidden file - and we really don't want to leave such files behind if they are still present. Try again after doing the following:

Likely cleaned up when you uninstalled it.

Thumbs up Re: IO 7 - suspicious default web page

Hey,

I followed advice and re the hidden file:

---Quote---
I couldn't find the file: **C:\WINDOWS\system32\joofdca** to delete. Hope this doesn't matter?
---End Quote---
It is probably a hidden file - and we really don't want to leave such files behind if they are still present. Try again after doing the following:

*HIDDEN FILES:* To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial62.html)

Found the file and deleted.

The other piece of advice:

*SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: * Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:
*

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.virushelpzone.com/
O4 - Startup: lsass.lnk = ?

*
Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
*CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis. *

When I ran the scan the line wasn't there. I did run spybot s& d last night and that picked up and removed a few problems, so that could have fixed it.

Anyway, everything seems to be ok now. Looks like I need to show my appreciation for some great help and make a donation! Will have to be at the end of the month after pay day!

Thanks

Rich
