2nd pc - norton appears to be the virus

I'm losing disk space on the C drive , and the desktop is getting much slower.

Yesterday and today I've been getting warnings that disk space is critically low.

I did a search via windows explorer (including system files) for files over 1mg.

I found that in the folder Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Anti-Virus\Quarintine\ there are are hundreds of files mostly applications (some are t$mfile) and they seem to be being generated daily (sometimes up to 10). All the application files are approx 2mg.
The files appear to have started generating on 10/10/07, Norton has not been used since 2005.

I thought I had uninstalled Norton, but Norton is in the add/remove list, but I can't uninstall it as there are errors.

I have had AVG intalled and running (all updates are up to date).

Can I delete these files (they amount to approx 23Gb), or is this a known virus behaviour.

I have Acronis backups dates 8th Oct and one 18th July which I would use to restore back to the clean state. Unfortunately the desktop is a Packard Bell, and I've been told that if I try to run the Acronis restore the disk will corrupt.

Any help very much appreciated.

First, try deleting only the files in this FOLDER (use SAFE MODE, if necessary - F8 on reboot)):

Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Anti-Virus\Quarintine

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to remove a failed uninstall or damaged Norton product:

Hello VopThis,

Deleted all files in Quarintine folder, and used uninstall Norton program. freed up 23Gb. Ran full AVG scan - clean.

I guess it's now a matter of monitoring to see if the files start generating.

Thanks for your advise.
