Can't Delete Folder & Computer Reboots Itself

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me (continued from Windows XP thread).

I installed Delete FXP Files and attempted to delete the folder, but received the following message: “Recursive folder deletion is not available in the unregistered (demo) version of Delete FXP Files.”

I’ve run Spybot 1.5 before and had problems (see below). Just opening the program takes clicking on it many times. I just tried to run it, but my computer rebooted before the program completed running (see below). I ran it again without my Maxtor External Drive attached, and it says “Congratulations! No immediate threats were found.”

I have AVG Free Edition 7.5.519, and have been running it, with the automatic updates, since before this problem began. My computer is usually on 24/7, so I should be update all the time, right?

I’ll tried running it just now, with my Maxtor External Drive attached, but it crashed. Without the Maxtor it finished, finding no threats. Under virus results, it says:

My Norton Systemworks One Button Check-up ran and, every time it runs, it almost always shows exactly 3 errors fixed in the Registry Scan, and exactly 13 errors fixed in the Program Integrity Scan. The Shortcut Scan found no errors, but the Norton Clean-Up Scan usually has a few temporary files that are not cleaned up. This time it shows:

BELOW ARE MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE PROBLEMS I’VE BEEN HAVING WITH MY COMPUTER:

Usually I can’t get through Spybot before the computer reboots itself. This is the problem I mention in my initial post, my “bigger” problem, which I’ll get to later. I guess maybe they’re tied together, and I should give you all the information I have, to this point:

THE PROBLEM:

For a few months now, my computer has been rebooting itself. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens, except that every time I’ve run The Cleaner, after this problem begin, the computer would reboot itself before the program completed running. AdAware 2007 would run fine, and find no real serious problems, but it crashed yesterday when I attempted to run it. Today, Spybot Search & Destroy (which never gets through before a reboot happens) ran fine, but said it found no threats, so go figure. I’ve run Windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ twice before, and both times it just found trace cookies, but yesterday it crashed, again mentioning trace cookies. Norton Systemworks 2006 runs fine,

I ran AdAware 2007 today with the Maxtor External Drive (see below) unconnected to my computer, and it ran ok, finding 2 tracking cookies.

HOW IT RESTARTS:

When the computer reboots, the first screen that pops up (the one that says, “press DEL to run set-up”) has, in the past few days, become poorly centered on the screen. The same is true of the Microsoft Windows XP welcome screen that follows, (the one that has the progress meter at the bottom).

Lately, the Found New Hardware Wizard has been starting up (also in the past few days). When it runs, it says “unknown software”, and “cannot install this hardware, as the wizard can’t find the necessary software.”

Since the reboot problem has begun, I always get the following message:

“The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of this error has been created”.

The log looks as follows, the same every time, I believe:

Spybot – Search & Destroy

Spybot – Search & Destroy has detected an important registry entry that has been changed:

Category: System Startup global entry
Change: Value deleted
Entry: KernelFaultCheck
Old Data: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 –k

It asks if I want to allow or deny change, and I always deny.

It gives the following details:

Description: Used in connection with memory dumps – you can disable these by right clicking on My computer, selecting Properties, and then the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button in “Startup and Recovery” in the bottom pane – under “Write debugging information” – click on the down arrow and then select “None” – OK your way out.

I don’t know if this is related, but I have a Maxtor 300 GB External Drive with automatic back-up, which I use to back-up my “C” drive. I also have most of my downloads go to that drive.

The icon is always red now, and when you hover the cursor over
It, it says the backup has failed! If I manually instigate a back-up,
It backs up fine, but the icon and the message remain the same.

Welcome,

The first thing I would do is uninstall one of your anti-virus programs, you should never have more then one running in the background. Seeing Norton is the 2006 version I'm betting your not getting any updates to that and that would be the one I would uninstall, but that is me as Norton is a reource hog. Having two can cause significant problems. Try that first.

If you decide to uninstall Norton here is an uninstaller from Norton:

If the above does not work for you:

Go here BitDefender and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post back and let us know what it found (post the log).

And post a new HJT log also..

Thanks for getting back to me.

I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2006 and Norton Antivirus 2006.

I ran BitDefender with my Maxtor External Drive attached. It found a virus and various problems. I saw that many things were deleted, and that attempts to disinfect were unsuccessful. The program said it was 5 minutes from completion when the computer rebooted.

I ran BitDefender again with the Maxtor External Drive attached. It was scanning somewhere around the following information when it rebooted again, with 1 minute to go before completion:

I can’t be sure exactly where it was, because my phone rang, and I was distracted.

I was trying to write down the virus information and I think this was all that was there before it rebooted:

At least one of the infected files could not be disinfected or deleted. These files are displayed in the <Detected Problems> tab.

There was a ton of more stuff the first time I ran the program. I don’t know if that means it solved all those problems the first time around, so it didn’t show them the second time I ran the program. It seems weird to me that it would say one of the infected files could not be disinfected or deleted, when it shows 2 identified viruses and 2 deleted files.

I ran BitDefender without my Maxtor attached and it was able to complete its scan, with the same results I show above (I wasn’t able to export them - - when I went to export them, there was no file name, and it wouldn’t save).

Without and with external hard drive installed, run the scanner below and hopefully it will do good.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

Run Spybot-S&D
Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Sorry,

Forgot one thing...during the same period that these "reboot" problems began, I've been losing usage of my USB connectors on my computer. Currently, 1 of 5 are working. Occasionally, some will not work for awhile, then start working again. The same has been true of my 2 firewire connections. I went to answer you a few days ago, but my mouse (USB) wasn't working. I tried connecting my PS2 mouse, but that connector doesn't seem to be working either.

The only physical damage I have done to my motherboard was last summer when, during removal of a SATA cable, the plastic housing on the motherboard that surrounds the SATA connection came off. The connector itself seemed okay but without the housing to hold things in place, I have not connected anything to that spot since then.

Let's try another scanner ot two and if it doesn't find anything then maybe you should look into hardware issues:

Please download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop:
Note: Please delete any existing copy of Flash Disinfector(if any) on your pc and download this one.

* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
* Follow any prompts that may appear.
* Wait until the program has finished scanning, then please exit the program.
* Restart your computer and see if problem still persists.

If useing firefox, right click link and select open link in new window

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

* Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
* This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
* Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
* Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
* Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
* Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

* If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
* After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
* Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
* Close Dr.Web Cureit.
* Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

After running the full scan of Malwarebyte, I attempted to delete that folder (where this whole discussion started, in the Windows XP discussion group), but was unsuccessful.

Somewhere in the middle of the night, the computer rebooted itself, again.

I ran the Flash Disinfector as requested. It finished really quickly and said “Done!!” I downloaded the Adobe Flash Player Update, as it said there were security updates included.
