SET2.TMP
I see many files with random name variations like that and it isn't necessarily the infection suggested by Jephree. There were also other variations of this as SET*.TMP where * equals a single digit number.

We might benefit by a more definitive diagnostic attempt, here:

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see any and all hidden files, please follow the directions here

Submit the following file(s) to VirusTotal for their immediate evaluation and feedback. Use any of the following methods, as appropriate:
  • Locate FULL FILE PATH if not apparent. Use Start (BUTTON)>Search, [WINDOWS+F] keys, or F3 key (from desktop).
  • Copy & Paste the FULL FILE PATH into the input BOX
    -- OR --
  • Navigate to the file in question.

Post those results in your next reply (if malware findings were indicated) for:

SET2.TMP
[suggest you submit several other variations for analysis as well]

The following scan will often remove such files:

Download ComboFix from one of the following links below:

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: If you already have Combofix, delete previous copy(s) and download the latest version. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet and restore connections before it completes its run. If Combofix terminates prematurely and breaks the Internet connections, they can be restored manually by rebooting the machine. Note: If you have an "always on" connection (DSL/cable), unplug the cable from the modem before running Combofix. Do not reconnect before Combofix has finished its scan.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your:
    • anti-virus,
    • script blocking and
    • any anti-malware real-time protection
before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HijackThis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

Thereafter, you should check if files of the pattern *.TMP still exist. Your result may be better if done in SAFE MODE (tapping the F8 key while rebooting). Do a search on the following exact TEXT and delete all items found:

*.TMP

Lastly,

Please download ATF Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1 by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
    Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Let us know how you make out with any current observations and requested logs.

Re: Mouse malfunctioning

Not sure what to do after hidden files are unchecked? Do I run HJT and post log? Or do I run search for SET2.TMP and then copy/paste the full file path onto the virus total site?

FIRST: run search for SET2.TMP and then copy/paste the full file path onto the virus total site?

SECOND: Run combofix and then run HJT and post log?

TMP files are meant to be TEMPORARY files. Accordingly, I always delete such files, but leave them in the 'Recycle Bin' for several days until I am satisfied I don't need those files back (can't recall an instance where this was ever necessary). I always remove such files for the following reasons:
  1. Over time they become useless clutter.
  2. Such files can often be hiding places for malware content.

If you are able to test another mouse that would be the simplest next step. There is no obvious malware reason for your malfunctioning mouse.

I would suggest you try the following scan:

Use the System File Checker (SFC) :
(typical runtime is 30 minutes) - please read over all instructions before proceeding.

Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
  1. Click Start | Run.
  2. In the Run box, type OR copy&paste:
SFC /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
  3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:
http://www.wxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=060117HT-Update_XP

If all else fails,

Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

REBOOT.
