SPAMfighter

I received an email from a friend during the week telling me that she had installed SPAMfighter on her computer. I was now on her ‘whitelist’, SPAMfighter is a truly wonderful product, etc.
The wording was quite unlike her usual style, and when I asked her, she told me that the program had sent that email to everyone on her contacts list as soon as it was installed. Sent it without even asking permission. And this was only the free trial version, so she’s now getting messages that her protection will run out in 14 days. Buy now. Ra ra ra.

Does anybody have any experience of this program, or the people behind it? I’ve never heard of any other program that used this tactic. I did a quick search through the archives on this section but it didn't show up as a problem there.

Re: SPAMfighter

The spam behavior of any tool is unacceptable and therefore makes that tool very undesirable unless it was your friend that took actions approving such notification to her friends. Otherwise, that tool may certainly have gone over to the dark side or be a worm completely unrelated to the tool in question.

I note that a tool by that name (if that is the same product now on your PC) is now longer offered for download at this reputable site:

Here is a another (dated) review for a tool also by that name:

Is the tool in question "Spamfighter Pro" (add that term in double quotes)? You need to refine your search using the following search term start point:

REFINED SEARCH: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...G=Search&meta=

Re: SPAMfighter

Thanks for that info Vincent. I'll follow your leads and report back on any further problems.

EDIT - I've looked through some software sites such as CNET, but they weren't much help. Most of the product descriptions are only the maker's own publicity blurb. No reports of any worms.

Matador Spam Fighter appears to be a different product, which is a relief, and there hasn't been a new version for a few years.

Bootneck02 has PM'd me to say that he's running SPAMfighter Pro with no problems, which is good to hear. The program's perhaps a little too obnoxious in its self-promotion style, and the salespeople are likewise too aggressive in their buy now techniques, but from what I can see it isn't malicious.
