res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Hi all,
I've been battling it out with my mates computer for the last week, and i'm just about ready to do a clean install its frustrated me THAT much. Basically the system was a complete mess (HEAPS of carelessly downloaded infected music and programs), but i have managed to get it 99% sorted, except for IE.

Regardless of what url or IP i type in, i get this message:

res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

However, symantec av can update no worries, and i can ping google.com.au among others. Aside from that, there is absolutley NO outside activity. I cant update any virus removal tools (S&D, HJT etc), windows update or anything - its completely locked up. I tried using firefox as an alternative, but still no good.

This is the case with dial-up, and also if i run it through my modem/router (which has two of my other pc's working on it happily), and also no good on my mates modem setup either. I even had to call Microsoft for activation after i ran the xp disc through it for a repair.

Here's my HJT log:

Re: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Check to see if Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server:

TOOLS --> INTERNET OPTIONS --> CONNECTIONS --> LAN SETTINGS

If the proxy option is checked, make sure to uncheck it and instead check the option to "Automatically Detect Settings"

Other 'Internet Explorer' Considerations:
  1. Try disabling all add-ons in IE by clicking TOOLS --> MANAGE ADD ONS --> ENABLE / DISABLE
  2. Make sure you are not working in "Offline Mode" (FILE --> WORK OFFLINE)
  3. Also, if you have a software firewall, disable it to make sure it is not blocking IE.

Re: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Thanks for the reply Vop. I have already gone through pretty much all of the "usual" stuff in IE to resolve the problem, but still no good although i have had an minor improvement in that now i'm not getting "res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm" error, now its just saying that i'm not connected to the internet (but i am!).

When i open IE i can see activity on the taskbar icon for about 2 seconds, then it stops and i get the IE error.

I have also been through msconfig and disbaled all of the unnecessary third party apps that i had previously left in.

I'm going to have a manual look through the regedit now. Way to spend a sunday evening...

Re: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Another thing that caught my attention was that when i try to install spybot s&d, on installation when it tries to update from the server, i see activity-it picks up the update server, then it stops with an error that it cant connect to the server.

Re: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

As the problem is not spyware/viri related in my opinion, I suggest you pop "shdoclc.dll\dnserror.htm" (without quotes) into a Google Search and work your way through all the hits for a possible solution. It will be a painstaking process I'm afraid, as most of the threads have no solution. There are also older ‘fix’ tools that work in IE6 but not currently/seemingly in IE7 (IEFIX, WINSOCKXPFIX).
ie7 shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm - Google Search

Is there anything else not working correctly on that PC? Perhaps a recent install corrupted something?:
Quote:
Then I uninstalled my Norton Systemworks, since I was also having trouble with LiveUpdate not working. I completely deleted all files and reinstalled it. Everything is back to normal, for now. I wouldn't have guessed that they were related incidents, but apparently they were.

Other steps you might try (instructions follow):

Use the System File Checker (SFC) :
(typical runtime is 30 minutes) - please read over all instructions before proceeding.

Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
  1. Click Start | Run.
  2. In the Run box, type/copy&paste:
SFC /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
  3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:
scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!

System Restore for Windows XP

Your best option may be to try a ‘system restore’ point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

REBOOT.

NOTE: If you use System Restore and don't like the new system state, you can undo the process and restore the machine to the system state it had before you ran System Restore. Alternatively, you can run System Restore to change the system state to a different restore point.

Re: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

Thanks again for the reply mate!! I'll work my way through those when i get home tonight. The system resore is no good either. It was one of the first things i looked for, but "apparently" there are no previous restore points (which is rubbish because i created one on that particular machine 5-6 weeks ago after ANOTHER virus-fest).

Anyway, i'll have a shot at your suggestions and post up the results.

Thanks heaps for your help - i really appreciate it!
