Unhappy Trojan

All of a sudden Monday night I got a screen from what looked like Microsoft Anti Virus warning me I had 1,300 viruses etc. Turned out it was a Trojan .Hubby reformatted and got it again reformatted and got it again. We are Networked could that be part od it coming back? All I have been doing is transferring data for 3 days. I use a Jump drive for Favorites, Music and Pictures and keys. Avast will not check jump drive so I thought I would use CDs as they can be scanned. My music will take me 10 years to transfer via jump drive....any ideas? I have been online about 20 years and never faced anything like this. I am on my laptop now

A trojan name or preferably the full file path of the suspect infected file would be helpful. Often, such false scare tactics are meant to sell you something useless. Try the following scan:

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, initially select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • It may also be advisable to run the longer ”Full Scan” in addition to the above scan especially if issues remain.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
  • A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report(s) in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
  • Please post any current revised observations.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

A confirmed infection could be caused by an infected jump drive. Also, an infected PC should always be isolated from all other machines by turning off 'file sharing' between PCs or better still do your resolutions offline or when not connect to the network. You cannot reformat a lone drive without loosing all your music content - are you sure that a reformat was in fact attempted?

A simple and cost effective solution ($120) could be to buy a SATA external drive (500GB or less) and acquire one of the following drive caddies for file transfer via USB or eSATA cable:

Thermaltakeusa»Storage»Docking Station

Red face Thanks Guys

After 4 reformats hubby gave me back one of my other reformatted computers.

A jump drive can be infected huh? Wonder why I could not scan it then....hmmm.

I have tons of things on my computer and he has Nascar and email and a few Jigsaw
puzzles. If he crashes it's no big deal *laughing*.

I forward the email you sent and he understands all that stuff and I don't but thanks so much for getting back to me. Now I can see why people fall for Phishing, it looked so legitimate to me I was almost fooled but then remembered Microsoft does not sell anti virus software.
Thanks again
Jackie
