Windows XP machine - left mouse button

I can not use the left mouse button and am using the keyboard to navigate through the progams. I can not move the cursor to drop into a new position with the left click - using backspace is the only way if I had to edit this text. And, the computer is running slow.

Please let me know if you see anything in my HJ file below:

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

Is there any reason why you should should still have Norton items left on you PC?:
Quote:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OSCHECK] "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\osCheck.exe"
O23 - Service: Symantec IS Password Validation (ISPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\isPwdSvc.exe
If not suggest you run the following uninstaller (cleanup):

PC Hell: How to Uninstall Norton

Read over the following directions. Ask if anything appears unclear to you.

Clean out TEMPORARY FILES procedures:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner CCleaner - Download

Install Options:
  • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
  • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load= C:\SKW\remind.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [A00F26A8A99F.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\newuser\LOCALS~1\TEMP\_A00F26A8A99F. ex e

[If you don't know what this is for:]
O15 - Trusted Zone: NavigateLA HOME PAGE

O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c0080911 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c0080911.dat

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, use CCleaner to hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Run CCleaner.

FIRST-TIME USE:
Select the ”Options” BUTTON option (top LEFT), ”Advanced” BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ”Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours”. Set back to default afterwards.

Select the ”Cleaner” BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ”Windows” TAB up front by default.
  • Uncheck ”Cookies” option (advisable)
  • Optionally, Uncheck ”Recently Typed URLs” option (potentially still useful)
  • Click the ”Analyse” button.
  • Thereafter, click ”Run Cleaner” after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

***** Clean out the Recycle Bin for items removed below, ONLY once you have regained the full functional use of your PC.

Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):
-- OR --
Use <Windows+F KEYS> and paste each FULL FILENAME Search PATH line (where available).
-NOTE-----> Windows KEY is located on the left between the <Ctrl and Alt KEYS>.

DELETE FILES:

C:\DOCUME~1\newuser\LOCALS~1\Temp\_A00F26A8A99F.ex e
C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c0080911.dat

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
  • Reboot.
  • Post a new HijackThis log.
  • Provide any feedback commentary as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Also run:

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, initially select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • It may also be advisable to run the longer ”Full Scan” in addition to the above scan especially if issues remain.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
  • A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report(s) in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
  • Please post any current revised observations.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

How do I get to the Control Panel if my mouse will not work? Clicking on Start in the bottom left of screen does nothing. Is there a keyboard shortcut?

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

You may have better success with the steps given in 'SAFE MODE' (tapping the F8 key while rebooting).

GETTING TO THE 'CONTROL PANEL':

Goto:
Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete KEYS)>File>New Task (RUN)

Type or copy&paste either of the following lines to access "Add/Remove Programs"
  • control appwiz.cpl
  • C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl

Navigate using the <arrow> and<tab> KEYS.

Alternately, you might want to try and access "System Restore" to see if you could restore your PC to an earlier time:

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
  • Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.
  • Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.
  • REBOOT.

NOTE: If you use System Restore and don't like the new system state, you can undo the process and restore the machine to the system state it had before you ran System Restore. Alternatively, you can run System Restore to change the system state to a different restore point.

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

Thanks,

I was able to get to the Add-Remove section and partially remove Norton but, 1/2 way through I received a error message. Tried it several times and rebooted several times - same result - error message.

Then, I attempted "safemode" and that wouldn't work after several tries.

Finally, I did a Hijack This scan to remove the files and I can't check the box because the mouse button does not work. Is there a keyboard function that will allow the box to be checked?

Thanks for your time.

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

An additional problem has surfaced - when sending an e-mail with a attachment the error message says the file "riched32.dll" is missing. Any suggestions on this and the other problems I'm encountering?

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

  • Did you try 'system restore' to a date when the mouse was last working?

  • Maybe you have a damaged mouse (dropped or banged around) and need to try another mouse? What kind of mouse is it?

  • Check the taskbar for a keyboard/mouse utility (if visable). Right click on any such utility looking for any disabled settings or to determine the make a model of your mouse (or to find a manual for it).

  • Perhaps the mouse driver has become corrupted or needs to be reinstalled:

Use the System File Checker (SFC) :
(typical runtime is 30 minutes) - please read over all instructions before proceeding.

Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. In the Run box, type/copy&paste:
SFC /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
    3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:
scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

I changed out the mouse (Dell, USB, optical) to a older one (Microsoft, IntelliMouse PS/2) and have regained use of the left mouse buttton and, the "riched32.dll" problem appears to have resolved itself.

Below is the HJ This file after following your instructions:

Re: Windows XP machine - left mouse button

That is one rather short HijackThis LOG suggesting possibly the use of MSCONFIG to disable selected processes. I can't analyze what I don't see.

There are many 'file missing' notification for Symantec. Did you try to uninstall it? You may need to repair or completely uninstall and then reinstall or select another tool to use:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
AVG: AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista
Avast: FREE avast! antivirus 4.x Home Edition, anti-spyware & anti-rootkit for Windows

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update 7 or higher, and install it to your computer.

Older JAVA versions have vulnerabilities that malware can and are using to infect systems.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

New Version should show as (HijackThis log):

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\… or higher

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall the current version and install latest version as per instructions below:

Click here to download HJTInstall.exe (Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2).
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.

  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button.
    • It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply (when next requested) .
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post a revised HijackThis LOG, please.
