Commit Charge high, cmputer slow

My computer is really slow, sometimes hanging on programs for a minute at a time before displaying windows I clicko n.

My unit:
Emachines T6212 AMD 64 Oricessor
3200+
1.99 Ghz, 384 MB

Right now, it's about 759M out of 916M. CPU is low, though it spikes to 100% occasionally. Also, computer is fine when I start it up, as day wears on, it gets much slower, particularly if I walk away from it and it goes to sleep.

Just renewed my Spyware doctor and ran a scan...

Erm... is anybody out there?

Available memory should never be lower than your typical maximum commit charge. You should likely have 1GB on your system. Otherwise, there is going to be a lot of swapping activity to disk and memory sluggishness.


Very normal


It often takes time to get things operational once your PC goes to sleep (memory management overhead). Also, your PC may attempt to do housekeeping when inactive and would swap operational programs off to disk. A real-time application like 'spyware doctor' can cause serious performance issues when inadequate memory is present.

Many many thanks, Vincent. Since there are no foolish questions, what's the best way to get to 1GB of memory? I can put it in myself, right? I'm just worried about breaking something.

I'll also note, parenthetically, that my computer didn't use to be this slow. And it was slow when I had McAfee, which caught no viruses, unlike SD.

The memory upgrade process is quite simple if you take the time to familiarize yourself with the steps involved.

Thanks for that... I just noticed that AOL spyware is running on my computer -- it found some adware. Should I eliminate it? Is it competing with Spyware Doctor?

If both are running real-time (and always checking), that could become not only a performance issue but also a source of potential conflicts.

Might want to discuss it with AOL or check out any FAQ (frequently asked questions).
