XP Desktop problem

I have encounter a machine with XP Pro with Service Pack 3 installed that the desktop is not being displayed when Windows starts. There is no Start button. Only the wallpaper is being displayed.

We are able run applications from using the Task Manager. I have downloaded a new version of userinit.exe and copied it to the System32 directory. I have run a repair install of the OS after uninstalling the IE7 per Microsoft's instructions.

I still do not get a desktop to be displayed in either the safe mode or normal mode. I have run HiJack This from a flash drive. Here is that log. I am hoping the log is showing SP2 because of the repair install.

You are potentially hiding issues in 'MSCONFIG' (ill-advised) plus your setup of Hijackthis needs to be revised to avoid potential problems (steps follow below).




* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Full Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
• A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
• Please post any current revised observations.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.





Please uninstall the current version and install latest version as per instructions below:


Click here to download HJTInstall.exe (Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2).

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
  
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button.
  • It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply (when next requested) .
• DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thank you for the response. However, for the sake of anyone else that has the same problem I was facing, you will need to put these executables onto a flash drive. Using the Task Manager, you can browse for the executable on the flash drive and then double click on them from there. The reason for this is that you will not have a desktop to launch or a start menu either.

The main point is that the Malwarebytes' program removed the infected objects. I would suggest to turn off the System Restore. Once I got the desktop back, I started running Spybot and anti-virus programs. It appearred that the infections were also in the restore folders. Once I got everything scanned and removed, I turned the system restore back on.
