Computer Slowing down, lose my internet connection...

Hi there, I need some help resolving this issue. I have a Dell XP Media Center laptop with sp3 updates installed. I dunno if its SP3, but ever since Idid that update my laptop's been killing me, mind you it had issues b4 but they were resolved (or so I thought).

The matter at hand...
Whenever I boot up, that blue screen that says loading Windows stay on forever, much longer than before..
When I am online, the computer slows down a whole lot, programs freeze even if its just one program being used...
IE freezes ever so often, and when I log online first thing in the morning it is fine.. an hr or 2 later I am losing my connection to the net.
I lose my connection easier when I am on the road and connected via wireless, it just goes dead. When @home, it happens too but not as often or prolonged as with wireless. Whats weird is, I still remain logged in to msn and Y! messengers and able to IM but I just cannot load any webpage or anything...i always have to reboot and do my quick fix

My quck fix: I run avast and spybot upon restart...it works for an hr or two then I lose my internet connection again and the pc starts acting sluggish once more. Its getting annoying and not as effective anymore and I am spending too much time doing my quickfix everyday. My HJT logfile is included below. Appreciate the help.

Have you tried uninstalling sp3?

No malware is showing in your log.



* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.


Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Well, seems like I killed it all.
I uninstalled sp3 and its notlooking good. After the uninstallation process, I was prompted to restart as expected. After I did, the pc wouldnt restart no matter what I did. First, it gave me an error that a file is missing so it could not proceed with the startup. So I tried starting in safe mode and it stood still when loading the mup.sys file I think... I went back to normal mode and tried restarting and now this is the error I am getting everytime i try to reboot:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\config\security
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Some how I am getting a feeling that this is not good. I'd appreciate your help getting this baby up.

OK. I went to microsoft website and spent all day Sunday fixing that. I FINALLY got my pc back up running but it still has sp3 on it. Now I realize there is a specific method to uninstall service packs, which I will try at the very last straw. Let me do the MBAM and post again.

Interestingly enough, since I went through this ordeal I havent been bumped off the net. Basically the microsoft website made me boot up into recovery console, then had me delete my old system, software, security, sam, and default files in the system32 folder. I was then instructed to copy the similar files from my repair folder (all 5 files) to my windows config folder. Reboot into safe mode, then copy my system restore files again into the same windows config folder...reboot then wala...it came up.
Long and short, i realized I did a system restore but just using the command prompt...as Isaid, it worked fine all of today so...it made me wonder, had I done a system restore in my utilities folder would it have just worked straight up and get rid of my bug?
I will watch and see how it goes over the next 2-3days, if nothing happens then I will come and let you know to close out this thread...

I guess we can close this then, all the problems just "magically disappeared" and it appears to be normal.
One thing though, when I boot up, it takes long to move from that blue screen where it says WINDOWS XP...before you see your desktop. After the desktop is there, it takes a lil longer than usual to be able to click on anything or open any program. Any suggestions?

I would uninstall the remaining Norton item showing in your HJT log.
