Can a camera memory card get a viruse?

My girl friend took the memory card out of her camera, put it in a card reader, and uploaded pictures to a computer. Come to find out the computer had a viruse, can her memory card catch that viruse by just uploading the pictures. If the memory card can catch a viruse, how would we get rid of it?
