Computer Stalls and Keeps Lagging Even On Startup

Hello,

I just recently two days ago have started having a problem when the computer hangs and stalls every 4-5 seconds or so. I notice it when I type, use the mouse, and when I double click on programs. I did a defrag, Scanned for viruses and spyware using AVG Premium, and even deleted cookies and other temporary memory, but nothing helps. I ran registry mechanic and removed all registry error and also nothing.

The computer takes longer then usual to start up and every time I type it stalls. It just happen out of knowhere and I just dont know whats going on. I wonder if its some serious spyware or virus.... The only system process thats running is the system idle. I could use some help so I will post a hijackthis log just in case. Maybe its something taking up a whole lot of Ram, but I did not really install anything that big for this change to take place within two days. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• Run the scan in SAFEMODE (tapping the F8 key on bootup), if necessary.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

That is not a particularly long log. Have you disabled selected running items using MSCONFIG that might be hiding fixable issues from us? Meanwhile, lets try the following:




Clean out TEMPORARY FILES procedures:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner CCleaner - Download

Install Options:

• Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
• Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.




Run CCleaner preferably in SAFE MODE (reboot tapping the F8 key after the beep).

Select the ‘Options’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), ‘Advanced’ BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ‘Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours’ (often, the latest download traffic could be the bearer of bad content – RESET back to default after this particular cleaning).

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.

• Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
• Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
• Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
• Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

Please do an online scan (scan only tool) with Kaspersky WebScanner
[Internet Explorer required]


Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    - Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  • Scan Options:
    - Scan Archives
    - Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
• This program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

I found the problem since the computer kept getting slower and slower and I tried all the antispyware and antivirus programs and nothing, I figured it could be a hardware thing, and guess what....

I ran the Diagnostic Test through BIOS and got a DST Test Failed Problem so I know its the Hard Drive.... Too bad the warranty is expired, Dell uses some cheap seagate harddrives and this one failed I guess after 3 years.

I tried chkdsk and the seagate diagnostic utility and nothing helped, the harddrive is dead....

I am in the process of getting another one and luckaly I had everything backed up on an external hard drive. Thanks for your help,

I was just wondering, what a good antivirus software is since I had Nod32 but want to switch because my subscription ran out. Also what should I run as well on my system with the antivirus?? Is avira good for a free antivirus?? and if I was to pay is bitdefender one of the best on the market which wont slow your system down???

Also, how do I close the thread so everyone knows its closed??

You might to read the following recent analysis as a guide (I don't recommend nor use suites as a general rule):

Reviewers rate Norton the No. 1 security suite

I currently use Nod32 (combined AV and AM - anti-malware) because it is hardly noticeable. I continue to hear many favorable comments on avira for a free antivirus. I have personally found bitdefender online scans to take an excessive amount of time so I have no basis on which to recommend that one for consideration.

If you have had a tendency to get malware on your PC I would strongly suggest you consider paying for a real-time version - all can be tested:

MalwareBytes Antimalware (MBAM)
SuperAntiSpyware (SAS)
*Spyware Doctor (SWD) - 400-500MB RAM desirable
*SpySweeper - same as for SWD

* These do a good job but need a good current dual-core CPU and lots of memory (1GB or more recommended) or you may find your PC lacking in performance.


Otherwise, after-the-fact on demand FREE scans may be all that you need:

MBAM
SAS
SWD



You might also want to investigate 'Vipre' - a combined AV &AM tool:
