Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

I have a computer that is very slow.
I have run MBAM - Superantispyware - Norton Corporate Edition - Spybot scans.....
Norton Auto-Protect keeps finding a Trojan called "netrapp.dll
I can't seem to get rid of it.
I did try turning off system restore, booting into safe mode and scanning.

Any suggestions?

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

Thank you for your advice.
I was only able to "remove" BHOno name)-{A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085}-no file.

The remaining items keep reappearing in subsequent Hijack This scans.....

I made sure all browsers were closed. I unplugged from the internet as well.

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

Do you use a tool such as MSCONFIG? Such a tool may be hiding other related files that we would want to investigate as evidence of possible re-infection agents, etc.

Currently, you have several files that yield very limited search results. Often such files could be a random name variation:

netrapp.dll - Google Search
dmserverf.dll - Google Search

Submit files to VirusTotal

Go to VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan
Copy each of the following lines into the white textbox (OR navigate/browse to the file in question):
  • >[Full Path]\Suspect File<
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\netrapp.dll
    c:\windows\system32\dmserverf.dll
Click 'Send File'.
Please post the results of each scan to this thread.

If VirusTotal's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
Online malware scan

System Restore for Windows XP

Your best option may be to try a ‘system restore’ point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

REBOOT.

NOTE: If you use System Restore and don't like the new system state, you can undo the process and restore the machine to the system state it had before you ran System Restore. Alternatively, you can run System Restore to change the system state to a different restore point.

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

Thank You for your reply.

Yes I sometimes use MSCONFIG but never on this specific computer.
Is there something that I should do with MSCONFIG on this computer?

I submitted each file to Virus Total.
netrapp.dll returned the following: 0 bytes received
dmserverf.dll returned the following: Result 0/39 (0.00%)

I then submitted each to Virus Scan
netrapp.dll returned the following: The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file
dmserverf.dll returned the following: Status "ok" Found nothing.

Earlier I mentioned that I had disabled system restore while running scans. Therefore I lost my restore points.

Can you please offer some other options or advise me if I have not correctly followed your earlier suggestions? Thank you.

I think such a tool is mostly overused and abused. I might use it for troubleshooting such as 'Diagnostic Startup' or 'Selective Startup'. With the 'Startup' TAB, if you turn off half of the startup items and your issues improve that become the right half to pursue or you need to switch your focus to the other half.

I don't see a firewall. We still don't have any idea what this file's purpose might be. Surely this is not a 0 byte file.

Several things to try:
  • Make a copy of the above file (e.g.: test_nt.dll) and try re-submitting. That might help label it as a potential trojan, keylogger, etc. The malware might have created barriers to not make that determination easy.
  • Goto each unknown file - right click on each, select properties, and examine vendor and version details that should/might be available.

Now we know why even a bad restore point might be better than none at all.

See if the following short scan reports any issues (scan only):

I tried Selective Start Up. Tried various combinations. As each successive reboot showed the Trojan after doing n Symantec auto Quick Scan, I'd delete one of the start up items.

Ultimately, I only had "VPTray" selected and still got the Trojan warning.
I think that I need the VPTray to be running otherwise Symantec is running and then I wouldn't have the auto quick scan to tell me of the trojan, right??

So I wasn't able to determine anything from MSCONFIG, at least the way I did it.
Please let me know if I need to do anything differently....

I tried to make a copy of the file, but was denied access as it was in use.
I then tried to get around that by renaming it but was again denied due to it being used.
So, I don't know how to copy it in order to resubmit it.

Sorry, but Go to where to locate each unknow file? The HJT log report? Sorry to be so dense..

I was told that I should turn off system restore when doing these type of scans otherwise the virus or trojans might reappear via the restored files. That is why I had turned it off.
Also this is not my computer, and I wouldn't have any idea when this problem began as they didn't have any A.V software active until I installed Symantec's.

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

Quote:
I was told that I should turn off system restore when doing these type of scans
If you ever see that advice here it would be as a very last step once your PC is mostly clean and behaving itself.

Quote:
Sorry, but Go to where to locate each unknow file?
Here is the files we are interested in:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\netrapp.dll
c:\windows\system32\dmserverf.dll

Search for those files as follows:

Use <Windows+F KEYS> (OR Start -> Search) and paste each FULL FILENAME Search PATH line (above).
-NOTE-----> Windows KEY is located on the left between the <Ctrl and Alt KEYS>.

You might be able remove the HJT items of interest, or to make a copy of netrapp.dll in SAFEMODE and check out their file properties, if you want to try:

Quote:
SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Alternatively, you could try running the following in NORMAL MODE:

Please follow instructions exactly as given

Visit this page below to familiarize yourself to the tool below and download from one of the links provided.

A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.

It is IMPORTANT that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.

Disconnect from the Internet.

Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Disable your antivirus program and any realtime malware scanners and script blockers now

How To Disable

Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while it's running.

That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Re-enable your anti-virus and re-connect back to the internet and post the combofix log.

*Note*
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

In SAFE MODE I was able to view the properties of each questionable file.

netrapp.dll :
Description: Alcohol 120%
Company: Alcohol Soft Development Company
File Version: 3.0.0.0
Date Created: 01/20/2008
Size: 106 kb

Type of File: Application Extension
Opens With: unknown application

Location: c;windows\systen32
Size: 106 kb
Size on Disk: 112 kb

Archived

I was able to click the other tab "version" I think it was, to see
ORIGINAL FILE NAME = stdMFC32.dll

I searched for that file and I could not locate it (looking in hidden files as well).

dmserverf.dll
I could only see dates: (no version tab here)
Created: 03/24/04
Modified: 03/01/03
Accessed: 03/01/09
Archived

At this time I also deleted a few casino type programs from this users computer, thinking maybe that would be a small start.

I hesitated to run ComboFix until I told you about what I learned about the .dll files.

Do you recommend that I do that procedure now?

Thank you.

Re: Very Slow can't remove Trojan netrapp.dll

I would prefer that you investigate copies of those file at 'virustotal', first.

IN SAFEMODE, find each file and 'drag & drop' (in combination with right-click if you prefer - then user prompted for actions) to make a copy on your desktop. Rename (right-click) such files (suggest an underscore character prefix) and submit:

_netrapp.dll
_dmserverf.dll

Alcohol 120%: That is normally a legit vendor and could be a 'false positive'. Can you find the following folder(s). If not is potentially orphaned leftover from an incomplete uninstall:

C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120

Otherwise, combofix may be our next best bet.
