Hijackthislog

Hello guys/gals, I just installed a fresh OS and would like for someone to look over my log beacuse for some odd reason I can't install my "charter securitysuite." My OS is XP Pro 64 Version 2003 SP2. Don't know if there is a SP 3 for 64 OS?...

BTW, what is a good virus protection that you can DL free if I can't get the charter one to work. I know it telling me to make sure I have all the SP before install and maybe I need SP3, then again don't know if there is a SP 3 for XP Pro 64?

Here is my log:

Re: Hijackthislog

We currently have only two professional readers of HJT logs.

One of which should be by this evening or tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

Re: Hijackthislog

No there is not. I run it on my gaming machine. SP2 came out at the same time as SP3 for XP 32. SP2 is the latest for XP 64. I doubt that there will be anymore service packs for any version of XP.

Charter Security Suite:

No 64bit option listed for XP:
Charter Security Suite? Installation - Charter Communications

Representative popularity statistics: Security Software - Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com

AVG8 is considered a solid AV and antimalware combo solution - I currently use it on the VISTA side of my dual boot PC and NOD32 on the XP side (neither 64 bit, however):
AVG FREE: AVG Free - Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for Windows XP and Vista (officially, MS Windows XP Pro x64 Edition, only – see below, however)

[2006 article] 64bit and x64 - Anti-virus protection in 64-bit environments
Quote:
The software installed on the 64-bit XP without any problems. When the installation process was complete, it launched 32-bit processes. We also had a minor flaw here as well: the System group on the About dialogue identified our 64-bit Windows XP operating system as Windows 2003 (or at least it indicated so)

Other often recommended free AV choices that I have never personally used or seen:

There are no malware issues evident in your log. However, there appear to be a lot of entries with 'file missing' which could also be a reporting problem with the HJT tool itself in x64.

NOTE: There are not a lot of malware fix tools that work properly, if at all, in x64. So, 'safe computing' habits are more important than ever in that environment. The following tool works properly on-demand' but not in real-time (always checking). Suggest you run this tool approximately weekly:

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • Run the scan in SAFEMODE (tapping the F8 key on bootup), if necessary.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Once the program has loaded, you can initially select the often highly productive "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
….. AND/OR go straight to the longer but more comprehensive scan:
  • It is also highly advisable to run the longer ”Full Scan” in addition to the above scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
  • A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report(s) in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
  • Please post any current revised observations.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

HJT = HijackThis LOG which you posted.

I really have no current considered basis to offer advice on such a question. Perhaps one of the other MODS may be able to offer an opinion.

Yes, but not limited to this only. In general, all links can be source risky if you are not careful - IM, email, phishing, etc. Your anti-virus can only protect you to a point. Other real-time anti-malware and many fix tools normally available in XP (SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, for example) are also sadly mostly unavailable and/or presently weakly compatible even in 32 bit VISTA. That could make any infection incident potentially unfixable or extremely difficult to resolve.
