re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)

Okay, my mistake, I tend to confuse, routers and modems, but that is a question for another time.
After removing Symantec I reinstalled the DLink stuff, and made another HJT log without reinstalling the AV, just to eliminate one variable. Due to connection problems I was not able to post this, and I did not have a thumb drive which would have allowed me to bring it home and post.
Comodo is supposed to be there only as a firewall.
So I will check that Comodo is only there as a firewall, and post again when I have done this.
After uninstalling Symantec I also ran CCleaner which usually removes "remnants."
One question with Norton removal is which one? There are about 10 removal tools on that site.

re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)

Any of Norton links will work.
Now, you need some AV.
Since with Norton there is impossible to use just AV, or just firewall, IF Comodo Security Suite uses only firewall part, you need to run Comodo installation again, and install AV part as well.
In any case, you need ONE AV, and ONE firewall.

re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)

Hi Broni,
A progress report, of sorts.
I have checked and Comodo is only present as a firewall. Symantec (Norton) is only there as AV so shouldn't be a conflict there.
As for router/modem, I tend to confuse the two. I have a modem, my friend does, as you rightly say, have a router. Apart from a router being able to connect more than one computer are there other differences I should be aware of (just for my general knowledge?)
Last time I visited I was unable to get an Internet connection at all (the computer has been moved inside the house, it is much closer to the router and with doors open it actually has line of sight from dongle to router, and only about 15m between them), so the dongle/router don't appear to be the problem. I know we were able to get connection before, but this is one variable eliminated.
The issue has the ISP baffled, even went into the router settings and put in a 26 digit hexadecimal password. When I left we were waiting for a call back from DLink support.
Would reinstalling the DLink software and starting from scratch (ie linking computer to router by cable and setting a new password be worth trying?

re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi Broni,
Thanks for the link, I have downloaded it and, subject to logistics, will post the log ASAP.
Cheers

re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)

Hi Broni,
Thanks for considering this thread as still active.
I thought the last instruction was to load Security Check, follow instructions and post scan results.
Here they are:
Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.98.4
Windows XP Service Pack 3
``````````````````````````````
Antivirus/Firewall Check:
``````````````````````````````

Windows Firewall Disabled!
``````````````````````````````
Anti-malware/Other Utilities Check:
``````````````````````````````

Spybot - Search & Destroy
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
HijackThis 2.0.2
CCleaner (remove only)
Java(TM) 6 Update 13
Out of date Java installed!
Adobe Flash Player 10
``````````````````````````````
Process Check:
objlist.exe by Laurent
``````````````````````````````

Spybot SDHelper is disabled!
Spybot - Search & Destroy TeaTimer.exe
``````````````````````````````
DNS Vulnerability Check:
``````````````````````````````

Scan took 29 seconds.
`````````End of Log```````````
Sorry, this issue is moving at glacial pace.
The lady is still waiting for a callback from DLink who seem to have a 36-48 policy which is not easily reconciled with her schedule.
Let me know what you deduce from the above, and I will post any progress from this end.
Cheers
re: [Resolved] Error messages when starting up (XP)
Yeah, we definitely have some infection here...
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.
