Applications working slowly/restarts/"inpage errors"

Hi all.

Yesterday, my PC started to show some odd behaviours, beginning with slow processes. For example, it took about 7-8 minutes to extract a 700mb archive using WinRAR (this normally takes about 60-90 seconds). Also, startup was taking longer and longer. Various applications loading and performing slowly. Various programs hanging, and requiring the use of the Task Manager to end processes.

At some point I got a blue screen with a KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR, followed by a restart. Unfortunately, I am not certain what was running when that occurred, nor was I fast enough to get the warning codes.

To address the slow extraction/processes, I did some checks with AdAware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. No malicious items. I also did a defragmentation of my system drive (C, which is a 250gb drive with about 140gb of data on it. It was about 45% fragmented at the time. This took 16 hours.

Today, things seemed to be going faster. However, I was burning a DVD-R with Nero Essentials, and I noticed it was taking a long time (approaching 20 minutes at 16X). Nero froze before the burn finished, and I got another blue screen with the following:

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x00000077 (0xc000000E, 0xc000000E, 0x00000000, 0x047BE000)

Beginning dump of physical memory

I did a chkdsk of an attached external hard drive. Everything appeared fine; no bad sectors. I scheduled a chkdsk scan of the system drive, which occurred after two restarts. No bad sectors or other problems.

Tonight I have done scans with three anti-spyware programs:

spybot: not finished. System restarted a few minutes in. A second attempt to start a scan froze the program and the system restarted.

MBAM: quick scan showed no malicious items.

Super Anti Spyware: full scan halted about 30 minutes in (I was out of the room). System restarted.

I attempted no further scans.

This is all fairly sudden, and I am clueless as to the cause. I could use some help. As a precaution, I plan to transfer my data (music, video, pics, etc) to a new hard drive tomorrow. However, I will not act until I consult your advice.

HiJack logs and Uninstall List follow. Thanks for your attention.

Re: Applications working slowly/restarts/"inpage errors"

I would say that your issues are more likely to be hardware related. See link here:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Be aware that such errors can be very illusive and time-consuming to resolve. Adding each stop error code to your search terms (one at a time) may further help focus your search for a definitive route cause:

- Google Search

VopThis:

Thanks for your reply. I am unsure as to whether or not you are telling me that this is not the appropriate forum, and that I should look elsewhere for help. If so, I understand. I will however take this opportunity to post a brief update, just in case someone might have some further insight.

This morning I checked the event viewer. The system events are full of the following warnings and errors:

WARNING 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.
ERROR 11: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.
ERROR 5: A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort1
ERROR 9: The device \Device\Ide\IdePort1 did not respond within the timeout period.

Erros and Warnings begin at 9:41 on Sep 22. Warning 51 has appeared hundreds of times since, errors 11 and 5 frequently, and error 9 occasionally.

I also had an Information Event ID 1001: Save Dump.
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000f4 (0x00000003, 0x8a5a0d08, 0x8a5a0e7c, 0x805d29ac). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini092409-01.dmp.

This occurred at about the time I was running the Super Anti Spyware scan that failed to complete.

Thanks again for your help.

Quick edit: If there is indeed a problem with my system hard drive, will I be doing further damage if I continue to access it in order to backup my data on an external drive?

Re: Applications working slowly/restarts/"inpage errors"

The error messages appear to reflect driver and/or possible failing hardware (hard disk) issues. Therefore running malware scans are not only likely mostly pointless at this time - this particularly fails to address more pressing issues that probably need to be first addressed:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR xp "Device\Harddisk0" - Google Search

What choice do you have here? You might want to take your PC to a local shop which could help maximize the likelihood of a favorable outcome in the least amount of time possible. The less you use your hard drive, the better - until you get your important data backed up.

Such an incident should be a wake up call to routinely backup your hard drives with a tool such as Acronis (complete drive image), which I use weekly (10-15 minute process on eSATA and often more than double that using USB to an external drive):
