Hard drive question regarding RAID 0

Not sure if this is the section to ask it, but it's sorta related to photoshop and hard drives..

Okay.. I'm about to purchase a laptop for photo editing/photoshop, and I don't know which hard drive to get..

I heard RAID 0 will make your hard drives faster? (I don't really understand it, but I hear it's faster)

So my question is if I configure a 5400 rpm hard drive to RAID 0.. will it be faster than a non-RAID 7200 rpm hard drive?

Re: Hard drive question regarding RAID 0

Unfortunately, any form of RAID always necessitates the use of more than one disk.

RAID level 0, indeed, is designed to multi-task (and speedup) the storage of data across multiple disks. However, the need for multiple disks on a laptop is generally not a practical option nor particularly optimal compared to doing RAID on a desktop. Furthermore, RAID 0, only on its own, is very risky in case of a failure.

Re: Hard drive question regarding RAID 0

RAID 0. As vopthis said, RAIDs (of any kind) are used when you have more than one hard drive which really is impractical in a laptop at best. Failure on one drive causes loss of data on both drives & laptop drives are slow anyway so whats the point? Performance has more to do with processor, ram, & graphics than with hard drive.

If you want real hard drive speed, get a desktop & stick a 10k rpm raptor in it.
