AVS software

I had an advertisement for AVS VHS to DVD conversion appear as a banner in gmail recently, and as I have posted on the subject recently I thought I would have a look.
AVS offer a free trial of their apps, and a one off price which entitles you to anything else in their stable of circa 50 apps, which includes format converters and registry cleaners.
I downloaded it to try out and it locked the computer. I restarted and used Eraser, or an ERUNT reset, to remove the thing, then googled reviews for AVS products. I found none for the VHS to DVD converter but many for the format converter at a site "did it make you go hmm" or something similar. These went back to 2002 I think, and were, with rare exception, very negative.
Has anyone else had any experience with these people?
