"Task Manager" Performance problem

We have a PC running Windows 2000 Professional that shows about 80% on "system idle process" on the windows task manager but the "performance" meter is showing about 80% used and the PC runs really slow... What is this and how do we get it out...

What CPU do you have installed, how much RAM do you have installed. Have you tried using a startup manager to limit the number of programs that are starting with Windows? I recommend Mike Lins Startup Control Panel.

Re: "Task Manager" Performance problem

That doesn't quite add up. If your system is running idle for 80% of the time, then it shouldn't also be using 80% CPU resources for most of the time as well. Is the system continuously slow or does it generally run fairly OK but then have periods of slowing right down?

Does the system speed up if you disconnect from the Internet?

Does the system speed up if you disable any background anti-virus software (after disconnecting from the Internet) ?
