New Machine
I just put a new machine together (my first one).
Tried using old C-drive with win2000 but wouldn't work, I assume because the old MB was soyo KT400/AMD 2600+ and the new one is Gigabyte K8 Triton, K8NS Ultra-939/AMD Athlon 3500+.
My problem now is that I can't get win2000 or any other system installed.
Memorex CD-RW works fine but when I try to get win2000 to boot up with setup it does weird things.
One time it just sat their and blinked after going thru mem-test and controller setups.
The next time it said it was booting from CD but then said Boot CD could not be found.
I tried running setup off of CD and it said that it could not be run in DOS.
Was able to get XP installed but don't like XP, I want win2000.
Have tried everything from trying 3 different CD's to switching CD position and get above messages or a new one was Disk error.
Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Re: New Machine
Have you tried the 2000 now that XP is installed?
I see other issues with trying to put 2000 on a "bare" HD.
Also if it's just the look of XP you don't like you can use the Windows Classic theme to make it look like 2000.

Re: New Machine
Won't from winXP it says you can't install win2000 because it is an older system and when I designate the boot to be from CD it says it can't boot from the win2000 CD even though I can put it in the Soyo KT400 and it boots right up and starts to install like it did before. The CD-ROM that I'm using was in the other machine so I'm baffled at where the problem lies. I have tried having only the sata drive in and one CD and still no luck. I know the win2000 CD is good because it works on another computor. I know the CD-Rom is good because I can use it to install other things while in winXP. I'm thinking maybe something to do with DOS drivers for the CD-ROM. I'm confused as hell. I just don't like XP because it is too internet oriented. It constantly wants to get access to the internet no matter what I'm working on and I've read some articles on M.S.'s spyware programs like alexa which by the way, I removed 6 of them right after installing XP. I'll figure it out. Has to be something simple like drivers or a bios setting that I'm overlooking. Thanks for the reply.

Re: New Machine
Crazy, crazy. I was able to install DOS 7.1 and then from DOS or CD booting I was unable to install win2000 pro, but I w3as able to install win98. Hey it's a start, now maybe I can install win2000 over it after saving a ghost image of win98 for saftey. This is the weirdest thing, but when it comes to Mr Gates, all his crap does weird things and different things from one boot to the next.

Re: New Machine
No luck, just have to go with XP for now. To many problems with win98.
Seems to be a bios problem and it just doesn't recognise SOME boot autoruns or something.
I can install win2003 Server, WinXP and win98, but not win2000. Thanks for your help.

Re: New Machine
If you want to "control" XP there are many services you can turn off, to prevent it from accessing etc. This is a good guide:

Re: New Machine
I guess I'll have to since for some reason it's the only thing that will boot up and install. LOL. Thanks for the link. XP is still working fine however it is a copy that was put on my other machine when I had it made so I don't know how legal it is. I have not been online with it yet but I couldn't install SP2 because the key was invalid. I don't want to go buy it because I have a 64 Bit machine and maybe one of these days MS will actually release a 64 bit OS and then I'll buy it. Thanks for all your help. CUL.
