any ideas on why, after having my OS reinstalled at a local shop, windows installer does not work?
get error message "....cannot install make sure not in safe mode ..."
i'm not in safe, i've cleaned my registry and reinstalled the installer .. no luck

Have you reloaded the latest Service Pack and updates from Windows Updates?

yeah .....i'm updated to svc pk 4,
it's a Dell Latitude (laptop) w/2000 Professional ...256mbs RAM
about 4yrs old ...runs great,
i bought it used from someone i used to work with and had to have the OS reinstalled when i first got it 'cause it was all password protected...and it worked fine
(truthfully i use it mostly as a sound system ...i have an external 300gb hard drive and use a DFX adapter so it plays MP3's thru a 5.1 speaker system)

anyway

a month ago it locked up ..nothin' but blue..
brought it in, guy said it was a virus (don't know how i run AVAST! antivirus and AROVAX shield) and he had to reload OS....o/k 60 bucks ....
worked fine ....
except for the installer....

You might try the latest Installer:

Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)
