How can I stop WMP hanging my PC?

I cannot view .wmv files as attempting to open them hangs my pc - I have to press the restart button on the casing, CTRL ALT DEL just doesn't work!!

This hasn't always been the case, it's only been this way for the past few months.

I have uninstalled WMP and reinstalled and am still having the same problems.

Now, I've searched other threads and see in the XP forum that someone was told to uninstall and reinstall the audio and video drivers (which BTW resolved that user's problems).

If someone suggests that for me, can you also tell me how to do it please?

Any suggestions or pointers gladly acted upon.

Have you tried downloading the latest version and installing that or are you only re-installing the latest version (if it's not the latest)? If you aren't on Media Player 11, download it from http://www.microsoft.com/mediaplayer.

To get the codecs, go to http://www.microsoft.com/download and then use the drop-down list to search for Windows Media Player downloads.
