computer freezes for no reason

Recently I been trying to fix a Windows 2000 Compaq computer

I have ran an AVG virus scan and found nothing
I have checked the disk, done some other cleaning
applications and it still freezes.

The freezes occurs at random points from what I been able to understand.
either at start up, or just right clicking on my computer it freezes to the point
that any time I press the keyboard it makes a beep and cant even CTR ALT DEL

The owner had her son reformat it but they didn't use a recovery cd for Compaq there are a couple of drivers missing but they are only multimedia drivers so it wont make much of a difference.

it has 200G or Hard-drive
512 MB or RAM
and like a 2GHz processor

they said it would not freeze before but after the reformat it does. any help would be appreciate it. I been trying to research it but ppl find a solution to something that does not provide a solution to me

Thanks in Advance,
Billy M

Re: computer freezes for no reason

A total "freeze" is in general a heat issue.

The second suspect would be RAM.

A "freeze" plus that beep indicate a hardware issue however I would always question the functional validity of installing a non OEM specific OS.

Especially 2K which was very proprietary.

My first choice in testing a freeze is running MemTest:

MemTest
--------------------------------------------------
Try running MemTest.

Did you reinstall the graphics drivers?

Re: computer freezes for no reason

Would I need to run to the TestMem on the computer or just on the HD (hard-drive)

and no I have not re-installed the graphic drivers. How would I know which ones I have to download thought since I dont have the CD's with me nor does the owner.

Re: computer freezes for no reason

MemTest runs off a boot disk and simply tests your RAM.

As to the graphics card you need to know the manufacturer of the card.

The manufacturer's web site will have the drivers to download.

What is listed in your Device Manager under Display Adapters?

right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager

Re: computer freezes for no reason

Hey guys I kept forgetting to come back here to thank all of you. Apparently it was the bad video card driver installed. I installed the correct one and it worked fine.

Thanks again guys
