Whether IBM 535X has capacity to accept windows 2000

Hi.

I have a IBM 535X think pad, which has windows 98. Its 1GB HDD and 64MB RAM.

Please help me in knowing whether thinkpad will accept Windows 2000 or XP. If not, Alternate Options.

Before you install the Windows 2000 Professional desktop operating system, make sure that your computer meets the following minimum system requirements:

* 133 MHz or more Pentium microprocessor (or equivalent). Windows 2000 Professional supports up to two processors on a single computer.
* 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum. 32 MB of RAM is the minimum supported. 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM is the maximum.
* A 2 GB hard disk that has 650 MB of free space. If you are installing over a network, more free hard disk space is required.
* VGA or higher-resolution monitor.
* Keyboard.
* Mouse or compatible pointing device (optional).

Sounds like your hardrive might be to small.

Your specs are too light for Ubuntu but Puppy 3.01 or 2.15 should run OK.
You can either run Puppy Linux off of CD or install to Hardrive as what is called a frugal install. The newer Puppy 4 series might be to advanced for your system requirements is why I suggest 3.01 or 2,15. You'll know if Puppy 4 won't boot up.

Windows doesn't support hardware like yours any more. But Linux does. You will have to learn a new way of thinking if you decide to run Linux. I have no problem running Linux and I am just a regular home user.That is the best I can do for you.
Maybe a Windows member can help you with Windows matters and installation.

XP, no way & I don't advise that you put 2k on that computer. Your problems are both the RAM & hard drive space. If you don't have enough ram for the OS and your 3rd party programs your OS will "fake" memory by running programs off of the hard drive. Everyone I've known that doesn't have enough ram complains that their computer is slow. My parent's last computer had XP & 4 times that amount (256 mb) of ram & it drove them crazy. I recommend 512 mb or more for XP (with no less than 384 mb) & I would say 128 mb (preferably 256) for 2k.

I don't go by Microsoft's requirements for ram because I believe they base that on what the OS needs for itself (which is in itself wrong). You also have to factor in the 3rd party programs that you run in addition to that. Having the correct amount of ram is crucial to performance.
