Re: confused

Before you start defrag, hit ctrl+alt+del. A box should pop up showing all of the programs that are running. It is my guess that there are quite a few. You want to close all of those programs except explorer before doing a defrag because every time the hard drive is accessed defrag must restart. Any one of the running programs could be accessing the hard drive which is causing the super slow defrag time. Print out this post and follow the steps below.

1) Unplug the internet cable from your PC.
2) Hit ctrl+alt+del
3) One at a time, select the programs, EXCEPT "Explorer"
4) Hit end program
5) If any popups come up hit OK
6) Repeat from step 3 until all programs are shut down except Explorer
7) Run defrag
8) When defrag is finished, reconnect network cable or phone line and restart the computer

Re: confused

Dear leah16,
Also hon, don't know which version you are running, but at the bottom of your screen on the right you should be able to see several icons, showing active programs. You can right click on each icon and see a box saying exit or close. Select that and then try running the defrag.
Would recomend that you purchase a good system utility software, such as Norton Utilities (speed disk is awesome), or maybe you can find someone to sell you a copy of System Suite, a reasonably priced product.
I'm sure it's not on the market anymore though in stores, they were bought out by somebody...
Good luck!

Re: confused

Have you made any changes to your Virtual Memory settings?
Ensure there are no screensavers set.
Restart in Safe Mode to run defrag.
If you're not already, run MEdefrag. (It's one of the things they did right on that O/S.) You can get it here. Create a new folder, unzip the files to the new folder, read the Read First file, it provides all instructions.
