Motherboard

I have a friend who is having problems with her pc freezing up, not booting up, and shutting down, and I was wondering if there is a way to check if the motherboard or other devices, may be worn out or in failure.
She is running Windows 98 on a Dell computer.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Motherboard

A bit more info would help. ie; Exact error messages if any (DOS or Windows), system actions/responses during startup and shutdown, Dell model number, etc.

In general, if there are no error messages or bios beeps generated during the DOS phase of the bootup, the problem lies within the GUI (Graphical User Interface, ie Windows). Please provide as much detail as you can.
