Administrator Log on
My wife has a 98Se that used to be 2000 Pro, and when they did a clean install of 98 their was no admin anything, I guess
Have had it for a couple of years+ now, and all of a sudden when we try to update programs now, it is saying you must have full administrative priveleges; have searched everywhere I can think of, and can not get any clue to this mystery; if any one would be able to help, it would surely be here.
Blessings to All

Re: Administrator Log on
I've never seen anything to do with "Administrator" in 98 or 98SE. The "clean install" couldn't have been too clean.
Anything on this order would be under Policies. Have a browse through the 98 Help files for policies and how to administer/change them. The utility is called POLEDIT. Look on the 98SE CD in;
(Your CDROM drive: )\TOOLS\RESKIT\HELP and
(Your CDROM drive: )\TOOLS\RESKIT\NETADMIN\POLEDIT
Post back with any more details you might come up with.

Re: Administrator Log on
Funny I was looking in there yesterday, but didn't quite know what I was looking for, and to be truly honest, I'm still not completely sure, and have to do some work today, so I will research it further.
It says something in there about a resource kit (disk) also, but when I checked the link, well, it doesn't exist any longer, or is that what the poledit will do; I also asked beth, and she said the guy used a format disk or boot disk to install the fat32 98Se over the Nt 2000 Pro, soooo
The updates she needs can't be downloaded to a disk either, so I'm not sure what to do, because she said that there was not any security set up, but the download says "must have full admin. priveleges
Bless You Sir for your response, and hopefully this mystery can be solved
I thought that the 98 kept me busy, but the Xp has alot of mysteries also, and both together-Well, I most certainly have a very deep respect for you guys-don't know how you do it LoL (Time Right)
Sincerest Blessings and a Definite Cheers

Re: Administrator Log on
Question, I have been doing some checking and came across a program called X-setup pro-so called ultimate tweaking tool for windows 95 to 03 (1800+tweaks) and am including the link to major geeks who also boosts it up alot, and say other features can be added also, sounds too good to be true, was thinking maybe it might help with current issues-please advise
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4083.html
got this info from pc world who also has the dowload and good reviews, went from there to the home site link below- who sends you to major geeks and another-betanews.com to download and I have used geeks before so I went there, as I believe they test their products. Blessings

Re: Administrator Log on
First, can you provide the exact (error) message?
Is this a brand name system? (Dell, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Gateway, etc.)
I loaded the XTeq utility a couple of years ago, didn't continue to use it, so I don't remember much about it. However, I'm currently downloading the current version and will have a look at it.

Re: Administrator Log on
The message was: you must have "full administrative priveleges" to download updates, and a short spec. list here
Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium III, 500 MHz (5 x 100)
Motherboard Name Dell OptiPlex GX1 500M+
Motherboard Chipset Intel 82440BX/ZX
System Memory 320 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type Phoenix (01/06/00)
Os was 2000 Pro and according to her they installed 98Se over it, says she doesn't remember alot, because it has been years ago, and it is an authorized version licensed to her, funny thing though, is that it just started doing this in the past week, and the only thing downloaded prior was the 2Wire setup for DsL (strange)
I'm also wondering, my mysteries started increasing at the same time, and now as my usual paranoid self I turn on sygate to block all at quitting time, and I seen that he blocked traffic and packets in the thousands over night, don't believe that we want all that communicating going on LoL (they said it had to be left on for 10 days in a row for optimization) (the router)
Anyways, I'm intensely curious about that Xteq-please keep me posted as to the usability for for minor geeks LoL
Blessings

Re: Administrator Log on
"... and the only thing downloaded prior was the 2Wire setup for DsL"
If you have the setup files saved for future reinstalls, try removing the "program" via Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, or the uninstall utility which came with it. This will help determine if this error message stems from that program.
"(they said it had to be left on for 10 days in a row for optimization) (the router)"
Who said? (I've not seen this myself, but that's not to say it isn't correct.)
Have you obtained the latest/applicable drivers for this system?

Re: Administrator Log on
Sorry, don't know how I missed posting back (Thought I had caught up)
Tried that, and it seems that their update system keeps saying that you have to have admin. priveleges to the computer, I contacted them, and of course, they said, contact the administrator, and I duly informed them that we were the administrators, and we have no clue, so the mystery still rages on LoL The reference of the ten days that I was referring to, was how long that the router had to stay on continuously to make sure that we were recieving the proper bandwidth. (that's why our firewalls go to block all when computers not in use-who knows what be knocking on your door when your not looking-LoL) V.p. not withstanding
So, we are still trying to figure out this admin. thing, any clue as to using that X-setup pro to maybe fix this issue, or any possible avenues that may be traveled to regain ownership of our computer LoL
Sincerest Blessings (we figure that if it can be figured, it will be you)

Re: Administrator Log on
Sorry to be so long in getting back.
I've run the XSetup utility and did find at least one element which adjusts a key under a POLICIES sub key. However, it's basically just a registry editor. Albeit a powerful one. If you use it, read everything presented to you on the way in, and if you don't understand anything, back out of that step. Changing one element can affect others.
Do you have a 98SE CD? Have you done/tried anything with POLEDIT?
"The updates she needs can't be downloaded to a disk either, so I'm not sure what to do, because she said that there was not any security set up, but the download says "must have full admin. priveleges"
Can you point me to these (above) updates (the source website, etc)? I'd like to check this.
